Death Eaters
"When a wizard goes over to the dark side there's nothin', and no one matters to 'em anymore."
"Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory."
The Death Eaters are the name of the supporters of Voldemort. They torture, kill and take control of enemies of Voldemort and Muggles. They are pure-blooded and have prejudice against muggle-borns and Muggles. Their mark is known as the Dark Mark which is a skull, with a snake through it. They were either captured by Aurors and send to Azkaban or killed by them after the fall of Voldemort. Some of them resisted capture saying that they were under the Imperius Curse. Those who resisted arrest returned to Voldemort during his second rise in 1995. On January of 1996 10 death eaters who were imprisoned in Azkaban escaped. Their first "battle" was with Harry in the graveyard and the second one (a real battle) was the Battle of the Department of Mysteries in 1996.

Voldemort, learning through a third party of Crouch's survival, rescued him with Wormtail's help. Crouch was given the delicate task of infiltrating Hogwarts, using Polyjuice potion to impersonate Moody, to get at Harry. Crouch was given the Dementor's Kiss before he could be made to give official testimony about Voldemort's return and activities.
Dolohov, Antonin
One of the five Death Eaters who murdered Gideon and Fabian Prewett, and who tortured many Muggles and opponents of Voldemort. Dolohov was sent to Azkaban, but escaped during the mass breakout of January 1996. Dolohov fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, during which he severely injured Hermione.
Goyle

Jugson
Fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries.

Karkaroff became headmaster of Durmstrang Institute. When he realized that Voldemort had returned, Karkaroff fled for his life.
Lestrange, Bellatrix Black

She attempted to torture Ginny Weasley, but was blocked by the other D.A. members present; she succeeded in applying the Cruciatus Curse to Neville Longbottom, but he was rescued. Macnair, Walden
Macnair's respectable front for years was that he was an executioner for the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures. He served as one of Voldemort's envoys to the giants, and appears to have succeeded in persuading them to join forces with his master. Macnair fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries.
Malfoy, Lucius
Brother-in-law of Bellatrix Black Lestrange through his wife Narcissa, Lucius escaped justice after Voldemort's downfall by claiming to have acted under the Imperius Curse, and thereafter worked at maintaining a respectable front. Lucius tormented Muggles for fun at the Quidditch World Cup, but fled in panic when Crouch jr. fired the Dark Mark into the sky. When Voldemort returned in June 1995, Malfoy returned to his old master. Lucius was in command of the Death Eaters at the Department of Mysteries in his master's absence, reining in his companions to avoid accidental damage to the prophecy sphere. He hid as Scabbers, Ron's old rat. He was discovered by Lupin and Black and went back to Voldemort. He sacrificed his right hand as part of the potion that restored Voldemort to a body, and was given a much stronger silver hand as a replacement. He was in the Order of the Phoenix during the first rise, but he was a traitor (he was in Moody's picture). He wasn't seen in Order of the Phoenix.
Riddle, Tom a.k.a Voldemort
The leader. Not really a death eater. The death eaters are his supporters. Is a half-blood and is the heir of Slytherin. He opened the Chamber of Secrets in Hogwarts two times, once as himself and once through his diary and Ginny. He left Hogwarts, changed his name to Voldemort (which he was using with his friends at Hogwarts) and sank deeply into the Dark Arts. During his first reign he tortured his enemies and muggles and killed many. He split many families apart. He tried to kill Harry Potter but his spell backfired causing him to be body-less. He was resurrected in 1995 and rose back to power with the Ministry ignoring this fact. He came out into the open in 1996 when he came to the Department of Mysteries (where he sent his death eaters to get the prophecy, but failed) and fought Dumbledore, to whom he lost.
