LA LLORONA

page 2 (conclusion)

"My husband." She sat on the chair just to the side of the couch rocking back and forth. She'd set the knife on the table. Now, she stood and covered him with a blanket. "How I had loved you. Then you stopped loving me, but I had my children and now you've taken them from me."
Juan rolled over in his sleep and smacked his lips.
"Forever shall your new love mourn you." She picked up the knife and plunged it deep into his side.
He screamed as he woke and looked up into Maria's face, eyes hollow and a deep leer crossed her face. "You."
She yanked the knife out. He sputtered and coughed up blood. Maria swung the knife down hard and Juan rolled out of its way onto the floor.
Knocked of her feet, Maria fell onto the coffee table and it broke under her weight. She lost her wind and her broken ribs shifted under her skin. She screamed.
Juan jerked the knife from her hand. His suit stained crimson where he'd been cut and his breath was ragged. Blood and spittle drizzled down his chin and he sank to his knees beside Maria.
She coughed and tasted blood.
The knife dropped from Juan's hands and clattered onto the wood of the table. Maria picked up the knife. His eyes vacant, found her.
"Donde estan mis hijos?" She said and stabbed the knife deep into his heart. "Where are my children?"
He fell forward onto the floor next to her and she closed her eyes and let her heart slip away to be with her children.
When she opened her eyes again, she was by the river, children floating in the arms of the trees.
