POETRY BY PAULINE HOPE

From Sullivan's Short Stories

-Glass Darkly-

Time can't change the past,
Time won't let things last,
We're past the beginning,
Crashing into our ending,
How did we forget to live?

Seconds passed into years,
Tears manifested as fears,
Looking up, I can't recall when we arrived,
But childhood took a last stand,
Only it's been buried under the sands.

The mistakes we've made still haunt us daily,
The medals we inflicted turned into a scarred reminder,
Though I can't recall how this became the answer,
I didn't expect it to become my unconscious prayer.

-Mother Time-

Oh mother time, treat us kindly
Mother time, treat us gently
For we are but foreigners in a foreign land
Seeking purpose and seeking life

Your wings have spanned the generations far and wide,
and you've treated us all as one
Before there was life,
You were
Flying in your beauty seeking company once more

Looking after shelter,
Hungry and cold,
We found your embrace
Huddled under your wings of time,
We've found our refuge once more.

But mother time, we've been held for so long
Sheltered by your ageless wings
Held in captivity,
For we are your captured, and your our captor

Oh mother time, set us free
We've been held in bondage far too long
You lent us your wings and gave us water
But mother time, set us free once more.

We've hid under your spanless wings
Scarce venturing beyond your land
Held in a ageless embrace
We plead to thee,
Set us free.

Black String

The faintest trace of tears,
I declared it to the unassuming stars,
The vague scent of burning wood,
And a dying out species predicting the future.

Sending out the barely spoken words,
Watching them drift into space,
I pray they will reach heavenly ears,
I pray it won't come back,
Don't look back at me now.

Dejected,
Rejected,
Send me a sign,
Let me know you hear me,
Let that be enough.

Hopes cascading into fears,
I'll tie them on a string and let them fly
Watch as they drift into space,
I pray they won't look back,
Don't look back on me now.

Reflections

And every once in awhile,
I will take a moment and pause in my thoughts
to reflect upon our time and you.

The silent chaos in my soul I could not hide,
Your penetrating gaze, I could not look away.

And though I'll have said 'goodbye' long ago,
The same tears then, will fight to break away again.
Though I vowed I let you go,
I'll never really have let you go.

And perhaps one day,
When I'm miles away,
I'll hear a voice; I'll see a shadow.
A memory will burn anew in my heart;
My eyes will lift and turn about,
And I'll see a man sipping coffee on a bench.
Maybe gazing at a obscure speck
that lends him a deeper meaning,
Than I could ever hope to fathom.

So I'll pause in my step,
A smile warming my face,
And though everything has changed,
Everything still remains the same.

Safe

Sitting in here,
Looking across, into the night
I don't feel safe here tonight.
I feel like I'm going insane sometimes,
Losing my mind,
And I don't feel safe here.

Nostalgia finds you again, on bent knee
Just one more memory, please, just one more.
I swear I can take the longing, just try to beat this wild eye.
It's a drug I can't get enough of, just one more fix, please.

The safeness of what's passed catches your breath,
Like a cold winters morning or the dew on the grass.
But safeness is fleeting,
Who can remember when last their father's arm was a shield?
"The world is a cruel place," he made sure to warn.
Though some don't have too venture far to see the world.

In here I start to feel crazed,
Let down and betrayed.
Run and hide away,
I'd be nice to just walk away tonight,
Get away, I can't just walk away.
I don't feel safe in here,

And I seem to have lost something, I just can't recall,
What it's like to feel wonder, at the rain falling down.

We're Alright

Look how the star's shimmer and shine this night
So white against this black canvas, here tonight
The brightness as they softly dance across the evening sky, catch your
breath
The height from which they fall, to be caught in your hand
And The moon's reflection ripples and shivers across a pond on a misty night

Then morning light, after such a night
Spilling it's rays after a spring rain
Shining it's light over everything
The fog traces back it's ghostly fingers for the day

And after a long winter's frost
Suddenly all is green
The bird's begin to sing, 'We're alright, we're alright'
