Alcoholic Risks

The disease of alcohol addiction is surprisingly wide-spread in the U.S. The disease directly impacts between twelve and fourteen million people in the U.S., as well as effecting millions more who are involved with alcoholics.

You may ask yourself what are symptoms of alcoholism? Drinking alone, using any excuse to drink, needing alcohol to "function", inability to stop drinking("I can quit at any time" does not count), violence when drinking, drinking in secret/hiding alcohol around the house, lashing out when confronted about their drinking, poor eating habits, not caring about ones physical appearance and having uncontrollable shaking in themorning.

Alcoholism is a disease, but it is also a symptom - an indicator of someone who is suicidal. The self-destructive behavior of the alcoholic is well-known and very troubling. Many alcoholics find themselves drinking more heavily as they feel this is the only time they are actually at ease and can forget about their worries and woes. But itis important to remember that when a person is intoxicated, their self-control is thrown out the window and their mental faculties are unable to ward off thoughts of harming or killing themselves. In too many instances, such events result in attempted suicide. The problem is sobad that about one out of every three people who kill themselves have alcohol in their bloodstream when they die.

Suicide is a very troubling point for alcoholics, whose risk level for attempted suicide is dramatically higher than the general population. -qvof/>in your life is a problem drinker, educate yourself about the signs that can warn of an impending suicide attempt in order to be prepared for such an event.

Also please note that some problem drinkers become very abusive (emotionally and/or physically) to their loved ones, leading to an increased risk of suicide bytheir loved ones as well.
