Hmmnn,.. Massive protests over the Western Hemisphere summit. They say it will enslave the working class and do nothing for the environment.
The idealists keep saying this is all in the prophecies.
I wish there was some way I could throw a diversion into their ideas,...
4/29/01
I saw Dick Cheney on Larry King. He was talking about building more nuclear power plants.
His reasoning for nuclear versus coal - less waste. I'll write him a letter suggesting windmill power - no waste! (+it's cheaper!).
5/6/01
So, now stations are getting charged to broadcast over the net - well, there goes freedom!
5/10/01
Interesting email: somebody requested a copy of my song "I Hate The Compact Discs" on reel to reel!(anything to please a fan).
5/11/01
The owner of The Mt. Vernon Hotel, here in Easton, is sponsoring a bluesfest. He's asked me to make a special edition of my newspaper to promote the event.
Why not? He's financing it and I have new information to put out!
5/18/01
Interesting night. I went to an art opening. The were artists making art and I was the subject of 2 art pieces (wheee!).
5/20/01
Another eventful day: I played outdoors at an auto show in Ambler, PA., and at night, I was the host at The Act II Playhouse in Ambler, PA.
5/23/01
Jammed at a new jam in NYC, went uptown to have dinner with some NYC acquaintances.
I'm kind of glad to see that Senator James Jefferies switched from Republican to an independent. Now the split isn't 50/50.
Now maybe there'll be a little less politicking going on in the Senate - maybe some real work will get done.
I have another part-time job: distributing postcards and stickers at concerts.
Hey, it's money, I travel, and it's fun!
5/26/01
This is some sad news; There was a popular DJ in this area for a dozen or so years at WMUH. He went by the name of Mr. Mark.
I've just been told that he committed suicide.
The other day I played at a theater in Mountainside, N.J. It was a songwriters' circle. Three people in the theater came up to me after the show - they said they knew my parents before I was even born!
That was interesting!
6/02/01
There was a eulogy for Mr. Mark at the Theater Outlet tonight. Different friends and acquaintances took turns reminiscing about him. I said a few words too. I've never been to anything like this.
6/5/01
I heard a news report of an impending teacher shortage in a Philadelphia high school. I've thought about volunteering.
6/09/01
Tonight, I worked with a teenage girl vocal group. They call themselves "Envision" (Britney Spears X 3). I brought them into the production studio at WDIY and helped them make a demo.
They did an original tune and a Christine Agulera tune called "Reflections".
One of the girls needed a little vocal coaching, so we went to the piano and I found myself learning and liking the song, "Reflections".
After they finished their version, I asked them to back me up on my version! - Yes! Stewart Brodian has sung a Christine Aguilera song!
6/10/01
Tonight, I guess, was my last gig at The Back Fence. I'm going to be training to be a DJ at WSBG in Stroudsburg and the only slot they have open is Sunday nights.
6/14/01
It's days like this where I'm most happy; I taped three interviews at WDIY: 1. Pete Palladino (of The Badlees), 2. The Cellarbirds (members of The Badlees), 3. Jenni Hackett (Stroudsburg area artist-has a new CD).
6/22/01
I played at a party tonight. I played a long retrospective of my music. It was all videotaped - 'not bad!.
6/26/01
There's been an approval for a WWII memorial in Washington, D.C. The thing is, they want to put it on the capital mall between the Lincoln Memorial and The Washington Monument.
Some people say that it'll take away from it's beauty and I agree. I'd like to start a letter writing campaign to have it put up somewhere else.
7/01/01
Well, tonight was my first night on the air at WSBG! Yahoo! My first gig in commercial radio!
7/5/01
ASIA played at Crocodile Rock here in Allentown! I got to meet the band! Great show! Great guys!
7/07/01
I've been trying my hand at Ebay. I've put some stuff up for bid + it sold!
I've also bid on a few things - 'won a few!..different.
8/8/01
Hmmn,.. human cloning - didn't we already ask this question in the movie "Frankenstein"?
8/22/01
The Powerball Lottery is $200.000.00 - should I travel out of state to buy tickets? Yeah, I need to get out of the house!
8/23/01
Didn't win! BUMMER!!!!
8/24/01
Well, I guess it was fun while it lasted.
The WSBG program director and I had a little talk. I was doing fine, but she really felt that my soft-spoken voice just wasn't right for commercial rock radio. She said 'we'll have to let you go'. On a positive note, she suggested that I try a station with a more mellow format. And she was nice enough to let me finish one more week on the air so that I can say 'goodbye' to my audience. (sigh....)
9/06/01
Another celebrity is gone: Hank, 'the angry drunk dwarf', from the Howard Stern Show has passed on. I met him once - it was at one of the Saint Patty's Day Parades in Scranton (I was impersonating Stern). He wasn't a bad guy! He was only 39. I visited the shrine they had for him outside of the radio station in NYC - I then went to hang around the crowd at the MTV music awards at Lincoln Center.
A few jaws dropped when I appeared - someone had their picture taken with me! I was so convincing that I nearly made it up onto a float to join a rap artist as they were getting ready to make their appearance at the awards. The guards/police said 'no' (aaawwww!!!). I stopped at a jam in Hoboken on the way home.
9/10/01 Wednesday marks the 10th anniversary of the release of Nirvana's "Nevermind" LP (has it been that long??). I'm tracking that whole album on my show at WLVR - along with In Utero and an assortment of non-album singles!
9/11/01
(I'm sorry, I can't write anything now).
9/12/01
The image of that plane going into the south tower of The World Trade Center has haunted me all day. Everybody at work was in shock - even the customers. How could this have happened? I couldn't go out anywhere. I'm just too much in shock. I filled up my car's gas tank when I heard of price gouging in the Midwest.
I hope the President declares war.
9/15/01
....Looking at pictures of the empty spot in the NYC skyline. It's as if I want to say, 'where are you?'.
9/18/01
I needed a distraction, just as anyone else does. I went to see Laurie Anderson perform at Philadelphia’s TLA.
It was a good show. She passed out paper to the audience to sketch the band onstage (I brought my own).
I waited around, after the show, and she autographed my notepad. I showed her my drawing and she was impressed by it. I said, "If you want it, it's yours". She took it! That made my night!
Interesting,..a major corporation is sending out a list of several hundred songs, which they want their 1400+ stations to not play for sensitivity reasons (eg.:End Of The World" by REM),..) - I think some of it is an over-reaction.
9/21/01
I'm watching a rerun of the Presidents' speech on C-Span. I'm writing down notes on it for my paper. Some of it I dis-agree with.
9/30/01 I have an audition at a club in NYC on Tuesday.
I'm nervous about this - I do enjoy playing in the city, it's good to be going back there, it's good that the city is open again, but....
I talked by telephone with one club owner over there, and I can tell the city has had its' heart riped out.
I'm still not sure if I'm going to drive in or take the PATH.
10/2/01
Well, NYC is recovering, I've played my gig and now I'm walking around the Village.
At least the outbound lane of the Holland Tunnel is reopened - that may bring some business downtown.
10/7/01
They finally did it. The US has started bombing Afghanistan. Well, it's not like they didn't ask for it.
I'm not a violent person, but sometimes, if you have a bully, you gotta give them a punch in the nose.
10/14/01
Fun filled day; filmed a scene for an independent movie, "Black Wine", went into NYC and played at a friends' gig uptown, stopped in at another bar downtown. [THE HOLLAND TUNNEL IS OPEN!!!]
10/20/01
There's been so many times I've talked about how great chiropractory is - my chiropractor passed away.
Dr. Michael Lynch, 54 - pancreantitis. Now what do I do?
10/21/01
I tried something different. There's a piano here at WDIY (I've just finished my on-air shift). I recorded myself playing piano and now, I've just overdubbed myself speaking. I was reminiscing about my visit to the World Trade Center.
I'm going to title this piece "WTC memories" and put it on some compilation.
11/1/01
Last night, I went into NYC to hang out in the Greenwich Village section. It was Halloween and one street was sectioned off for people to walk around in costume.
Yup! I walked around in my Howard Stern best, and people went nuts! Lots of people had their picture taken with me! It was great!
And now, to wipe the smile off my face, is the news that California is expecting an attack on one of their suspension bridges. I hope they catch them beforehand. Remember, some plastic explosives were found at a locker in a Philadelphia bus terminal.
11/17/01
Last night, I went into NYC again. I saw LOURDS play again. Later, I walked around Greenwich Village.
I finally drove down to Ground Zero. It's very sad. I was there at 3:00 this morning, and they were still knocking down pieces of whatever is left of tower #5.
12/08/01
Today I went to NYC with the idea of getting into the audience of MTV's "Wannabe" show.
There were people in line, dressed up like Jennifer Lopez and Fred Durst (of Limp Bizkit).
I couldn't get in, so I went uptown to Strawberry Fields in Central Park. It was the anniversary of John Lennon's murder and there were a lot of fans, singing songs and hanging around.
I sang some songs; Beatle/John Lennon + a Traveling Wilbury's tune(for George). I was even interviewed for a Manhattan cable show too! I came home, changed my clothes, went to work and then to WDIY.
2/17/02
Busy day? You decide:
11AM distributed my paper in Stroudsburg, 12PM Allentown, 2:30PM Philadelphia, 6:30 PM NYC, 8:30 PM saw a band, 10PM Hoboken, 11PM Pattenburg 11:30 PM home in bed.
2/9/02
Thursday night, I saw LOURDS perform in NYC, I then went to my usual hangouts, uptown.
Last night, I went to see The Breeders at The North Star Bar, in Philadelphia.
I figured, since I'm on The Breeders' Tribute album, that I should at least introduce myself.
I had a chance to speak with Kelley Deal. She recognized my name when I told her I was on the album. She said she liked my rendition of "Saints".
I later picked up an 8X10 of the band - autographed!
2/17/02
Last night, I attended and played at the Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg.
It was surprising to see how many people that I knew were there! It was fun! ('picked up lots of CD's for my radio shows!).
3/18/02
Today I made it final; NICKEL is no more! I will be writing for The Scene Monthly - six years was a good run, but it's time to move onto other things.
3/26/02
It was fun to be interviewed on the Phil Stahl Show again. I played some newer tunes, talked about a few things. I accomplished a lot!
4/01/02
Two radio shows on April Fools’ Day. I played Luther Wright And The Wrongs' "Rebuild The Wall" in its entirety on both shows.
The CD is a bluegrass rendition of Pink Floyd's The Wall" album.
4/13/02
Well, today I got to play Rock and Roll Ambassador!
A band I'm friends with, The Catholic Girls, needed to be shown around the area to put their CD's + tickets on consignment at local shops. They're opening up for Dave Davies soon and need to publicize their gig.
I'll be introducing them onstage, by the way! (as Stern).
5/17/02
Well, Lance Miccio (of The Easton Blues Jam), coaxed me into doing another issue of NICKEL. I guess he knows a good promoter (me!).
5/23/02
This is unusual; Interviewing a local musician just before they move out of the area.
Van Wagner, who’s been a fan of mine for many years, has just released his 5th album.
We sat at a jam at the Blue Marsh Canteen and between sets we managed to record a whole interview for my radio show.
It'll air just hours after he leaves (6/1) - he'll be back visiting the area in tour + such.
6/1/02
If only India+Pakistan could put their differences aside and test their missiles into an area where Bin Laden is rumored to be hiding.
6/15/02
Overworked,... I distributed two newspapers in the same month, played NYC plenty of times (see my schedule) - I took the weekend off from radio. Maybe I'll clean my room.
6/16/02 (Father's Day)
I was listening to someone on NPR this morning. He was complaining about Ozzy being called "#1 Dad".
True, parents and children swearing at each other is not the best of families... but I've seen a lot of families in my travels and the Osbournes seem to get along a lot better with each other than some other families.
What do I mean? Is there wife beating?, child beating? drug abuse or the house looking like a pig sty?
So what if they have money?
You don't need money to get along with your family!
7/3/02
Well, another appearance on national TV! This morning I was on Regis And Kelly Live on ABC.
I appeared as Howard along with an OZZY look-a-like, Kelly Osbourne look-a-like, and a Kid Rock and a Pamela Anderson!
We then walked around Manhattan interviewing people on the street for later broadcast!
7/15/02
The Scene Monthly has bitten the dust. There's another area paper called Pulse Weekly. I'll send articles to them.
7/19/02
I drove 4 hours into central Connecticut to tape a 30 second commercial as Howard Stern.
7/30/02
I've just stumped the best doctors in the country.
I went to Mt. Sanai medical hospital in NYC. I've had a sleeping disorder for 2 years.
Every morning I wake up, pressing my head into the pillow + gritting my teeth. Now where do I go for answers?
8/4/02
MTV had auditions for their show, "Wannabe". I tried out for the Ozzy part - didn't make it but, hey! It was fun!
