[sessile] adj. 1. Bot. Stalkless and attached directly at the base: sessile leaves. 2. Zool. Permanently attached or fixed; not free-moving. [Lat. sessilis, low, of sitting < sessus p.part. of sedere, to sit.} -- sessility (American Heritage Dictionary)

Quotations and Epigrams

"You ask me 'what is the point?' Well, my friend, the point is slippery and difficult to grasp." (The Virtues of Immobility)

"Why use a chemical when you can use a tool? Why use a tool when you can use your hand? Why use your hand when you can use your imagination?" (Saving the Earth by Doing Nothing)

"I have spent my entire life searching for the boundaries of the mind. It seems to go as far as the refrigerator and the television." (The Seed Cast Upon The Sidewalk, from Seven Essays on My Sofa)

"And what is so wrong with contemplating one's navel? It's generally full of lint and other fascinating stuff." (Saving the Earth by Doing Nothing)

"Read your local newspaper if you don't believe me. The incidence of people accidentally killing themselves from scientific ignorance is statistically very small. So it is not that we're too stupid or too hopeless to survive the present crisis. Even if you include instances of so-called spontaneous human combustion, which I do not. That is the opposite of death by ignorance. It is death by the sudden intrusion of knowledge -- insight so powerful that it fries the neurosystem in its complex entirety. (The Impromptu Couch Lectures, unpublished manuscript)

"Yes, Virginia, there is a reason for everything, but sometimes it's a really stupid reason!" (The Impromptu Couch Lectures, due for publication in 2004)
