"AS THE WORLD TURNS"

A PLAY IN ONE ACT

Our play opens in the luxurious front bar of an obviously high class hotel-something a little like the Waldorf Astoria or the Ritz. It is, however, the Crown and Anchor. Two men are drinking at the bar. Their names are Warren and Ross. They are apple cheeked embodiments of glowing health. As they raise high their glasses of Coopers, they exude vitality and well-being. The beauteous barmaid, Jessie, approaches.

Jessie: (suppressing a sigh of admiration for the virile pair) "Same again fellers?"
Ross and Warren:(Together) "Yeah, Ripper, beauty bottler, sensational"
A passing fellow of King's College:(sotto voce) "Why does the wit and repartee at High Table never reach these standards?"
Ross: "Belch"
Warren:"Jeez, I'm busting for a piss."
The ghost of Oscar Wilde: "If only I could have written dialogue like that."
Enter two haggard characters. They are little better than caricatures of human beings. Their faces are gaunt, and they walk bent double, their hands clasped to their stomachs. After some close inspection, we realise that it is in fact the IRA and Sister Sarah.
IRA: "Oh Jaysus, me guts."
SS:"What a lovely dinner....uurrrggh"
IRA: "BARF, BARF, BARF."
SS: "It was, it was....the lentils!!"

To be continued!
