Set during the minor strikes of 1984, Billy Elliot follows the story of a talented young boy (Jamie Bell) who gains an interest in ballet while attending boxing classes. Secretly he attends ballet instead, and forms a strong bond with his teacher(played by Julie Walters).
When his father learns of his new found interest, it threatens to break up the family. He forbids his 11 year old son to continue ballet. Billy finds himself torn between his love of dance and the opinions of the male dominant family he lives with. When offered an audition in the Royal Ballet School, Billy has to find the courage to follow his dreams in hope for a brighter future. The film succeeds because of it's emotionally charged characters, who bring heartwarming performances to every facet of the film. Billy Elliot is a funny, exhilerating and deeply sad movie in good measure. Billy Elliot is one of the best British films of recent years. The cast is both lovable and believable. This is a charming movie that is simply not to be missed! Cyber Rating: 5 out of 5
