HORSES
Horses can react in many ways. They will kick, buck, rear, scream, squeal, (when they are angry, they put back their ears and show the whites of their eyes). When they are attentive, they put one or both ears back to listen to what is going on. Shying can be caused from playfulness, real fear, or poor eyesight. A scared horse will become stiff, and it's ears will tilt back. Frustrated or bored horses may chew on wood on the stall door or fences.
The 1st type of horse was Eohippus. The 2nd was Mesohippus, and the 3rd was Merychippus. 4th was Pliohippus, then the common one, Equus.![]()

There were two types of bridles that were commonly used; the Western Bridle and the English Bridle. Also, the two types of saddles; Western and English.![]()
A mare is an adult female horse. Shying is a sudden, sideways movement of a horse due to fright.
A sire is a father horse, and a dam is a mother horse. A horse is "out of" the dam and "by" the sire on a pedigree chart.![]()

Horses take a lot of time, care, responsibility, and money. They have to be brushed and cleaned daily, and should have access to food and water. Though some people have horses that feed on grass in the pasture, sometimes this can hurt the horse because the grass is too rich. The horse will get sick, and you will have to take it to the vet. DO NOT FEED YOUR HORSE DUSTY OR MOLDY HAY, WHICH WILL ALMOST ALWAYS RESULT IN DEATH FOR YOUR HORSE!! Also, horses MUST ALWAYS have clean water, because some horses would rather die of thirst than drink dirty, polluted water. If your horse is kept in a pasture, make sure they have access to some sort of shelter, and your horse will still need to be fed regular horse feed.![]()
Most foals are born at night under cover of darkness and away from prying eyes and possible danger.
The best time of year for a foal to be born is in the spring, when the weather is at its kindest and the lush grass is at its best for the mares.
A newborn foal can stand up within an hour of being born and can keep up with the rest of the herd within 24 hours!
When first born, foals cannot eat grass because their legs are too long to reach it!
Boy foals are called colts, while girl foals are called fillies. Young horses are called colts and fillies up until the age of 3.
Yearlings are colts or fillies who are a year old.
When a horse is born, it's legs are almost their full adult length! - giving them that extremely cute "long-legged look" we all love so much.![]()
Horses will often stand "tail to tail" and shelter each other from annoying flies by swishing their tails for each other!
Some breeds are renowned for their tails. For example Appy's often have sparse (thin), tails while Friesians and Morgans are known for their long luxuriant tails.
As well as using them for fly swatters, horses use their tails to send signals to each other about how they are feeling.![]()
