1. MAKING CANDLES
Making candles is a very simple project that you can have fun with.

Please first of all be sure that you be very careful with this project not to get a burn from the wax or the containers.

It is a very good idea to have a very open clean area to start this project. Also, you might want to cover the area with newspapers or some aluminum foil.

Be aware that wax is flammable at high temperatures. You should never leave hot wax unattended at any time.

MAKE A MOLD

You can make a mold of many different kinds of containers. Such as reuse clean soup cans or other food or beverage containers. Some rules you mant want to keep in mind in doing this is. Make sure the mold has a mouth that is biger than the base. For the candle to slide out easily. Oil the inside of the mold with vegetable oil. This will make the mold be easy removed.

YOU WILL NEED A DOUBLE BOILER

You should never heat wax directly in a pot on the stove.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A DOUBLE BOILER

Use a coffee can in a pot of water.

Put a fairly large pot on the stove with a couple of inches of water in it. on fairly high heat. Place a clena coffee can in the water while it is heating. There should always be some water in the potbut not enough that it floats the coffee can. Eventually the combined weight of the can and the wax will be heavy enough to keep the can from bouncing around.

MELTING THE WAX

While your water is heating you can start placing the wax in the can.

If you would like you can recycle old candles or a combination of the paraffin wax and old candles.

PREPARING THE WAX

Cut up the paraffin into small chunks and put it in can. If you are recycling old used candles choose your colors wisley. Remove any wicks remaining in the candles.

Stir with an old spoon. If you find any remaining wicks in your mixture in the can remove with fork or spoon.

COLOR THE WAX (THIS IS YOUR CHOICE)

Crayons are a good choice for this. Mix different colored crayons to make different colors if you like. Always break your crayons into small pieces. wait tell the wax is almosted melted before you drop in your crayons. Stir and mix color thoroughly.

MAKING YOUR OWN WICKS

Cut thick cotton string about three inches longer than your mold will need. When you get your wax melted, dip cotton string in wax. Hang your wicks from clothesline or place them on waxed paper. Make sure you lay them in a straight line.

POURING THE WAX

Remove the can from the boiling water. Let the wax cool for a minute or two before pouring into mold. Tilt the mold slightly toward the can. This will help with neatness. Pour wax very slowly into the mold. Leaving some space at the top edge.

PUT IN THE WICK

You will need a pencil to lay across the mouth of the mold in order to hold the wick in place while the wax hardens. Take a wick and lay it along the length of the mold. Add and exta inch of string for the protruding section of the wick plus extra to wrap around pencil. Insert the wick into the center of the mold. Wrap the end of the wick around the pencil. The pencil will hold the wick in place until the mold hardens. Most candle need at least half a day or so to harden. You will be able to tell from the bottom of the candle and the center.

REMOVING THE CANDLE FROM THE MOLD

Be very patient in removing your candle, or it might be damaged.

OTHER MOLDS

For other molds such as paper cartons simply tear the paper away.

TROUBLE REMOVING YOUR CANDLE FROM MOLD

Immerse the mold in very hot water for a few seconds, thos will melt the ouside of the candle and it should slide out.

2. HOW TO MAKE PLAYDOUGH

Homemade Playdough

Continue to mix, then knead dough until it is smooth and elastic without being sticky. Dump the dough onto a flat floured surface and roll it out with the rolling pin or bottle.

There you have your playdough for hours of fun with your child.

3. MAKING A FAMILY BOOK

How many times have our children asked questions about their grandparents or great grandparents that we simply didn't have the answer to offer?

There has been a great interest of genealogy over the last few years. It is no longer enough to know simply names, birth dates, and death dates. Young and old alike have shown a large interest in this topic.

This is an idea of a gift each of us can offer to our children. In doing so, we will find it to be a gift to ourselves as well. What could be more generous than offering their past?

The first step is buying or making a folder or notebook. It can be as simple or elaborate as you wish.

Each page should have a question on it. You will want one book for each person you’ll be talking to. Then the fun part begins! Think of the questions. Ask things you don’t know, facts the recipient of the book would like to know. Ask what life was like during their childhood. The possibility for questions is truly endless.

Find out the way things where in the old days, what there family members names were. Also, get the names of people thay knew that might know things about the family.

The books can be given to parents, grandparents, and other family members to fill in, or you can fix the book your self for your children.

Bridging the generations in this way is a nice thing to do for your family. You might just be surprised and find out a few things you diden't know about the family. A whole new life of memories will be opened.
