Cox Family-William Cox/Sarah Cocke Cox descendants
This Cox line is thru the Colonial Virginia family of William Cox & Sarah Cocke Cox of Henrico County per some of our family researchers. There are currently 3 different Cox lines which have a tenuous claim to these ancestors, but how does one determine which hypothesis is the most valid ?
Mr. Allen Jeffries, a long time Cox researcher & descendant, has made an interesting case for John Cox of Goochland Co., Virginia being the father of our Henry Cox who settled in Blount Co., Tennessee with his 2nd wife (Anne Madison) and their children ca. 1790's. He also has this John Cox who died testate in Goochland Co., Va. in 1785 as the son of Richard and Mary (Trent) Cox and is seeking input from other interested researchers to further test these ideas. His willingness to defend his hypothesis & make changes based on any newly discovered information increases others' acceptance and confidence in his research. Mr. Jeffries can be reached at geoffries@knology.net.
There were 4 grandsons of one descendant, the old Revolutionary War soldier Curd Cox (born 1762) & wife Susannah Overton Cox, who were named for their grandfather. All were from Curd's sons; none of his daughters named a son for their father. This Curd Cox was the son of Henry Cox who settled in Blount County, Tennessee after moving from Virginia with his second wife & their adult children; Henry's will specifically mentions Curd as one of his sons, although by his first wife.
One of those 4 grandsons named for their grandfather was from old Curd's son, Moses Cox b. 1801. Curd Cox b. 1827, son of Moses, was married to Amanda Mary Renfro in Knox County, Tennessee in 1849. Curd & Amanda Mary's son, John C. Cox, was my gr-grandfather.
Notes & analysis of these grandsons were shared in an email from Mr. William Irwin, Jr., a Knox County, Tennessee author & historian. Further research has turned up no information that would conflict with Bill's theory on this Curd Cox Family & Curd Cox grandsons named for their grandfather. Fortunately, archived documents (wills, deeds, census, & probate records) were found in the Knox Co. records several years ago which named the principals in this branch of the family.
