Belém do Pará
Santa Maria de Belém do Grã Pará - Saint Mary of Belém of the Great Pará was founded in 1916 by Francisco Caldeira Branco. It is located in the mouth of the Amazon River. The city of the mango trees, as it is known, is famous for its tropical afternoon rains, its Portuguese architecture, and its friendly people.
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Belém, known as "A igreja da Sé" is among many of the beautiful monuments in Belém.

São Luis do Maranhão
In my recent visit to the Northeastern part of Brazil, I had the pleasure of visiting São Luis, the capital city of the state of Maranhão. It was founded in 1612 by the French, however, the Portuguese influence is everywhere. São Luis, the city of tiles, for exhiting beautiful tiles on the facade of its building, has the largest collection of Portuguese tiles in Brazil. The coastal area is one of the most beautiful in the country and because of its water temperature, a unique diversity of aquatic life inhabits the region. The large island of "Upaon Açu" has four counties: São Luis do Ribamar, Paço do Lumiar, Raposa, and São Luis.
In June, "Bumba-meu Boi, a folkloric celebration with exotic dance and sounds takes place everywhere with its unique costumes, music, and dance. The most important character of the celebration is the bull - "o boi".
In February São Luis celebrates its "carnaval de rua", street carnaval with bands, and traditional dance groups called "blocos". Any time of the year is a good time to visit São Luis. Some of the places to visit are: Central de Serviços Turisticos da Prefeitura de São Luis, Praça Dom Pedro II (pronouced segundo), Museu de Artes Visuais- Museum of Visual Arts, Teatro Artur Azevedo - Artur Azevedo Theater, among many other places.
