Coprolalia & Copropraxia & Tourette Syndrome
Coprolalia can be defined medically as a physical neurobiological condition involving faulty metabolism or synthesis of specific neuro-biochemicals, rather than a psychological condition. It comprises bizarre, often socially embarrassing and distressing, involuntary vocal tics (verbal utterances) specifically obscene or socially inappropriate and derogatory words or phrases. Coprolalia is found in a minority (some estimate 30%) of those with Tourette syndrome (or Tourette's syndrome) or TS for short. Copropraxia, a related complex motor tic symptom involving obscene gestures or motor tics, is also found in some TS cases. These outbursts of obscenities associated with these behaviour disorders are neither intentional nor purposeful.
A brochure entitled 'Understanding Coprolalia' written by Sue Levi-Pearl and Joanne Cohen is available from the Tourette Syndrome Association (TSA). The TSA website address is:

Tourette syndrome or TS is an inherited neurological disorder associated with frequent and repetitive involuntary vocal tics (utterances of noises or words) and motor tics (muscle movements). TS is not a mental disease and many TS sufferers are very stable, successful and creative individuals and are found in all professions. The frequency and intensity of TS and its associated symptoms is known to be affected by stress factors. For more online information on Tourette syndrome visit:
