A Football story!
As a young boy watching Jerome Bettis run wild as a fullback in Notre Dame. Jerome on television looked fat, but in person he was built. I can remember over hearing the announcers state Bettis is running back at the fullback position. This is when I knew I was going to be special. The year is 2000, which marks my first game at the college level. This is the first game of the season, and my nerves where erupting. I could feel the warm blood flow through my body, but my heart speed made that blood presume the theory of being cold. I couldn't remember nothing but the overwhelming smell of sweaty socks in a sky-blue locker room. The moment had me in a daze, like if we were going to war. The tunes of Dada dada dum da, became imaginary flash backs.
These flash backs, hyped me up which allowed me to focus on the virtual memory of my high school days. The coach is speaking to the team. He reflects on how the game is 48 minute long. As the length of the game stretched the coaches philosophy of how the game is two Greek gods, with 70 sub par gods. These sub par gods; under the tutelage of the super god will battle for supremacy. I didn't hear a thing because my emotions where already blooming like flowers in the summer breeze.
I couldn't allow any speech interrupt my thought process, of playing my first collegiate game. We are walking to the field, as the thunderous roaring crowd cheered. Then with a loud boom followed by smoke; where the music of Tina Turner's Simply The Best erupting, allowed us to sprint out like race horses onto a gladiators arena. My heart was racing high, as the excitement of the crowd glittered my eyes. This is something special because 40 thousand people are cheering for this game to start. I can hear the school's theme song as the announcer brings out both teams starting lineups.
My heart sunk to my stomach with excitement when my name was called over the loud speaker. The crowds roar at the announcement of my name drove goose bums up my spine. The electricity of the game brought hunger into my heart. Since the magnitude of this game was at a high level because it was nationally televised, my nerves exploded even more. I knew I had to do something special because my family and friends were watching the tubes, and the crowd cheered my name.
That type of attention made me feel like, I was going to turn this program around. This time and moment I felt the vibe. The vibe legends get before they make history. I didn't know that once those whistles blew, and the roar of the crowd settled down. On the most electrifying play of the game I was going to make school history. The place kicker on the opponent's team took a couple of strides to the ball, swung his foot. As his foot makes contact with the ball, you hear a loud thud. The ball goes sailing into the air, and starts to spiral as it comes down.
I place my eyes on the ball and work to get my hands, and feet secured underneath the ball as it comes down. I catch the ball, and start to run. While I am running my team-mates call Willis, which is a play to help the blocking techniques for the special teams. I starting to gain confidence that I can take this to the house. Then I saw a huge defender closing in on me. I'm watching him, as he is watching me. I knew I had to do something as I plant my left leg into the turf, a block from my team-mate sprung the defender into the turf. I didn't look back or waited for the outcome as I took one burst into the small opening. For the first three seconds I ran as hard as I could.
I knew I was running for a touchdown when I heard the crowd scream, and the defenders weren't around me any more. The only thing I saw was the opposite endzone. I stop when I heard the whistle, were I looked at the official, while he raised his hands, and then the thunderous roar from the cloud followed by the music excited me. I looked at the big screen and saw the play that I did.
I was amazed on how my cut back set up the block the sprung me free. After the cut back you saw a speedy body flashing by a crowd of people. Then for 25 yards that person was running alone. I couldn't believe it, and the fans screamed my name made me think. That is when I knew, I was going to be the school's program changer. That play was the longest play in school history, which was 100 yard opening kick-off return. The coach told me that what I did he never seen anyone do, in all of his years of coaching.
