Critics Point to Loophole in Law

Legislation intended to remove radioactive waste from New Mexico could allow the waste to be left in the state instead, critics say.

R-N.M., in a massive spending bill approved over the weekend, was intended to ensure waste from a proposed nuclear fuel factory is disposed of outside the state, according to a Domenici aide.

Gov. Bill Richardson's office called the legislation "inadequate" to address the state's concerns that New Mexico could end up stuck with the plant's massive inventory of waste.
