Hexavalent chromium is an extremely toxic substance that causes horrible things to happen to human beings. Hexavalent chromium, when drunk even in small quantities, is known to cause cancer, ulcers, convulsions, kidney and liver damage, and who knows what else.
Well, folks, guess what? Hexavalent chromium is now in the Ogallala Aquifer thanks to our supposedly "safe" nuclear industry. If this doesn't scare the hell out of you it should. But, do you think any of our politicians, business leaders, or representatives of LES will tell you the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?
If you have never seen the movie "Erin Brochavich" starring Julia Roberts, you should. It's not only about what hexavalent chromium does to people, it's about people who are liars and who care more about corporate greed than they do about people.
The Hobbs News-Sun has muzzled the Hobbs based CNIC (Citizens Nuclear Information Center) for almost 3 years now because the CNIC dares to try to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. In fact, the Hobbs News-Sun will not even publish the internet URL of the CNIC web site so people can go to the internet and read what the CNIC says so they can judge for themselves.

LES NUCLEAR WASTE IS UP TO 3 1/2 TIMES MORE RADIOACTIVE THAN WIPP TRU WASTE AND IT WILL STILL BE UP TO 3 1/2 TIMES MORE RADIO ACTIVE THAN WIPP TRU WASTE EVEN AFTER IT IS "DECONVERTED".
Calling a rattlesnake a rose may deceive a lot of people into believing that rattlesnakes are not dangerous but it is still a deadly rattlesnake. Solid LES DUF6 waste turns into UF6 GAS at 56.4 degrees Celsius (133.5 degrees Fahrenheit).

The temperature in Lea County New Mexico often goes above 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer. Anybody who has climbed into a closed up car in 100 degree weather knows how hot it is inside the car. In fact, when it is 100 degrees outside the temperature inside a closed up car can be 140+ degrees. Oil storage tanks in Lea County New Mexico can be 200+ degrees inside. During hot summer days the temperature INSIDE the uranium byproduct cylinders (UBC's) that will store LES DUF6 waste will be in excess of 133.5 degrees Fahrenheit INSIDE the LES DUF6 waste containers (UBC's). WHEN SOLID DUF6 TURNS INTO GAS THE LES UBC STORAGE CONTAINERS COULD START LEAKING as the deadly hexaflouride UF6 gas EXPANDS AND FORCES ITS WAY OUT OF THE LES UBC STORAGE CONTAINERS INTO THE AIR. Or worse yet, the UBC's could be blown up. If the LES UBC's start leaking or are blown up when the DUF6 is in gaseous form and the wind is blowing from the east at 10 MPH it would KILL EVERYBODY IN EUNICE, NEW MEXICO, New Mexico in 18 minutes (4.5 minutes if the wind is blowing at 40 MPH) and it could only take an hour or so to kill everybody in Andrews, Texas and Hobbs, New Mexico if the wind was blowing in their direction. LES conveniently neglected to tell the people and the NRC about this little tidbit of information. LES deceived the people and the NRC about what the consequences would be to the people of Lea County New Mexico and Andrews County Texas if the LES UBC's are blown up or start leaking in hot weather when the DUF6 is in gas form. DUF6 does not turn into liquid until it reaches 147 degrees Fahrenheit (64 degrees Celsius). The possible consequences of a terrorist attack at the proposed Louisiana Energy Services (LES) nuclear enrichment facility to be located about 3 miles from the city limits of Eunice, New Mexico is a very serious business which deserves 100% openness, honesty and truth but LES LIED to the people of Lea County New Mexico and Andrews County Texas, and to the NRC at the first NRC meeting about LES that was held in Eunice, New Mexico in the fall of 2003. If you have been deceived, in reality you have been lied to because deception is merely a clever form of lying. A half-truth is a deception. When the NRC was asked what would happen if terrorists blew up the DUF6 waste that will be stored at the LES nuclear enrichment facility the NRC asked LES to answer that question. LES said that there would be no danger to the people outside the nuclear enrichment facility because DUF6 is stored in solid form that is heavier than lead and if it was blown up all that would happen is that it would go up in the air and fall back down on LES property. That is a half-truth, a deception, a lie because it is true only if the DUF6 temperature is below 133.5 degree Fahrenheit.

The people in Eunice and surrounding areas are in deep trouble. Here are a few reasons why:
1- A leak in one of the LES above ground storage containers could kill everyone in Eunice in less than 5 minutes when there is an east wind and the summer heat turns LES waste to gas.
2 - Deconversion will not reduce the radioactive danger of LES waste. LES waste is up to 3-1/2 times more radioactive than the TRU wasted stored at WIPP. This is NOT "low level" waste. Our politicians, the NRC & LES are simply lying to the people by claiming that LES waste is "low level" waste.
3 - WIPP waste is stored 40 miles from any town. LES waste will be stored only 3 miles from Eunice.
4 - WIPP waste is stored 2,000 feet in the ground in salt beds. LES waste will only be stored 50-75 feet in the ground at WCS. Once LES containers start leaking - and sooner or later they WILL start leaking - that's all she wrote for Eunice and the surrounding areas.
5 - Any way you look at it LES waste is a nuclear nightmare waiting to happen for the people of Eunice and the surrounding areas.
6- Of course, nobody wants to talk about the other little problem we have with LES either.... water and the drying up Ogallala aquifer. Since Eunice doesn't have any water (Eunice gets their water from Hobbs) the Eunice City Council has authorized LES to tap into the Hobbs water supply too. Of course why should LES, who will only be here 35 years, care if the Ogallala will dry up in 40 years. LES will be here and gone by then. So will the rest of us because this whole area will be a dried up, highly radioactive wasteland.
