CLONING HUMANS

NEWS RELEASE DATED 6/9/97

A RESPONSE TO THE CONCLUSIONS OF THE PRESIDENT'S NATIONAL BIOETHICS ADVISORY COMMISSION BY THE INTERNATIONAL CLONING SOCIETY

*****************************************************************************

The International Cloning Society (ICS) has already issued a statement dealing with the impulsive, reactionary and often hysterical nature in which the subject of human cloning is generally being handled (see our news release dated 3/6/97, linked below). So, we will not belabor that point at this time.

Aside from the matter mentioned above, the only major concern we have with respect to the conclusions reached by the President's Commission evolves around the issue of "morality." The Commission's primary conclusion stated that it was "morally unacceptable" to clone a human being. We are not sure just how the members of this Commission were selected, nor what their respective credentials are/were, but one thing we are certain of is that, even if they were all clergymen, they are not, were not, and could not be, empowered with the task of determining the morality of this issue. Society itself is at terrible risk if any segment thereof is chosen and empowered to establish the parameters of morality.

The remainder of the Commission's conclusions were, in our opinion, rather trite and mundane and will have little if any impact on the course of events surrounding the issue of human cloning. Suffice to say there's absolutely no way the President or his Commission, or any regulatory body, is going to prevent the inevitable from happening. Scientists bent on achieving their goals may be somewhat inconvenienced, and they may even have to go underground in some jurisdictions, or simply operate in some safe haven, but they will, in time, achieve their goals. The cloning of humans will, in time, occur.

The International Cloning Society (ICS) remains a strong proponent of carefully managed human cloning. We see the greatest threat to the entire subject of human cloning coming from the impulsive, panic driven, reactionary forces in society. The worse thing we, as a society, could do is to push the process offshore or underground. In such an event, God only knows what may occur. In short, we need to find a way to keep the entire subject of human cloning upfront and in the open. When its all said and done, we will need to accept the inevitability of human cloning, and thereby expend most of our energy in keeping it carefully managed. Indeed, in the long run, people will come to realize that there are and will be a considerable number of situations where human cloning will not only be acceptable, but even desirable.
