Body characteristics:
Huge hands. Long arms. Decent strength in biceps and forearm area. Lower body strength OK. Wears band on left knee. Wears sleeve on left elbow. Athletic for size. Good explosion with legs. Has balance and agility. Conditioning needs work. Sucking wind at 11:38 of 1st half.
Offensive game:
Handles ball well with left hand on drive from top of key in secondary break. Reverses ball quickly out of UCLA high post option. Catches ball well around hoop. Finishes strong. Can take a hit & convert. Post up strong. Uses body well on block. Nice touch on free throws. Great footwork on perimeter and post area. Has a quick face-up shot from 17’ on left wing. Scores well off balance going to middle. Free throws are good. Gets ball in shot pocket with fingers spread. Has spin on ball. Needs more bend of elbow. Mechanics are not fluid. Rebounds with two hands on offensive glass. Doesn’t bring ball down. Good balance. Plays above block. Good use of jump hook from 12’ vs. pressure on right block area. Terrific passing skills. Unselfish! Passes well out of press break. Understands when to help out to relieve pressure. Recognizes double-team from right block. Overhead pass is excellent. Good passer looking opposite. Does a great job of throwing long outlet pass to start break-accurate. Good angles on ball screens. Technique is good (wrist over wrist). Physical on offensive free throw situation-not afraid to bang.
Defensive game:
Great explosion while corralling defensive rebounds. Able to rebound and outlet in same motion. Help position is good. Beats cutter to spot. Has hand up on perimeter. Moves feet OK defensively. Does a terrific job of holding his ground-arms high. Great shot blocking ability. Goes over top of screen/roll quickly. Good anticipation. Hustles back in defensive transition. Works on denying ¾ high side.
Mental approach:
Works before game on reverse pivot, perimeter shots, jump hooks & free throws. Also, does ball handling drills on the side. Listens to coach in the huddle. Complains to officials after being fouled hard. Gets angry at teammate for making a mistake. Has head in the game from the bench. Talks. Very intense!
Recap:
Curtis is a Top 15 pick whenever he decides to leave. He reminds me of former Piston player Bill Laimbeer. He is physical, intense, shoots the ball well and sets good screens at the top of key and elbow areas. He also has good athleticism on the boards, blocks shots and passes well. He has that good combination of being able to play at both ends of the floor. I am concerned with conditioning and getting up and down floor consistently. Seems to lumber some when running the floor.
