'Notes' from Mrs. Klein's Class

Noteworthy information for the month of February......


GRADE 8:
During the third and fourth quarters, students in grade 8 will take a musical journey
from the continent of Africa in the early 1800s to the birth of Rock N' Roll in the 1950s.
Students should arrive on time to class with a double pocket folder and paper,
prepared to give their best effort.

Class song for June graduation:
Songs for consideration can be submitted with audio and lyrics until 2/13/12.
At that time song suggestions will be narrowed to 3 choices and a class vote taken.


ASSIGNMENT for the week of February 6, 2012:
No assignment given this week.
Students should bring a double pocket folder and paper to class next week.

GRADE 7:
During the month of February students in grade 7 will begin developing their melodic skills. This month small groups will be working to compose part of their program for
the Spring concert in May.
Composer "vanity" license plates are displayed outside the music room. Great work!
Spend some time viewing them and see how many you can guess.


ASSIGNMENT for February 6, 2012:

COMPOSER/VANITY PLATE PROJECT....this was due Monday, 1/23/12.
Composer biography.....
-Typed; single-spaced; 12 pt. font of choice
-Picture optional
-Titles of minimum of 3 compositions
-Facts of era which affected the composer's work
-Vanity plate created on cardstock which highlights the composer with medium of choice


MARK YOUR CALENDARS! (Posted 8/11)
Students in grade 7 will participate in the performance of the Spring Concert
on Wednesday, May 16, 2012. The concert will be performed in the church at 6:30 P.M.
Attendance is not optional.

GRADE 6:
There will be alot of movin' and shakin' going on in grade 6 during the third and fourth quarters in music class. Students will move to the music of Ragtime to Rap. The unit
will conclude with a project in which each student will create an original 2-3 minute
dance presentation.

Assignment for the week of February 6, 2012:
Return assessment sheet for the "Head & Shoulders" dance.
6B: You did not receive your assessments back until Wednesday,
so extra credit for returning signed forms has been extended to Monday, 2/5/12.

GRADE 5:
Students in grade 5 will continue developing their skills in rhythm and harmony during
the month of February in music classes.
Activities and music will enhance student understanding of and skills in....

-correct posture, breathing and choral techniques
-singing more in 2 and 3 part harmony

-vocal and instrumental improvisation
-orchestrations for Orff instruments

**Students will also begin drumming circles during the month of January,
honoring the traditions and music of the African people.

GRADE 4:
Students in grade 4 will continue developing skills in harmony, melody and rhythm during the month of February. Note identification and musical terminology will be introduced in preparation for recorder performance in February.

Recorders are a flute-like instrument which can be purchased through the school.
If an older sibling has already purchased a recorder in the past, no further purchase
is necessary. The instrument should be relabeled with the present fourth grader's name
and brought to school in the original case or ziplock bag by the beginning of February.

Grade 3:
Third grade students will continue to develop their skills in form
during the month of February.
Songs and activities will develop an understanding of.....

-AB, ABA, RONDO and theme and variations
-Interlude

-Folk music, dance and creative movement pieces
-Families of the orchestra

**In each class students will continue volunteering
to lead the sung greeting and closing of class.

ASSESSMENT:
A written test on the 4 families of the orchestra will be given on Wednesday, 2/7/12.
Study guides were sent home on Wednesday, 2/1/12 for students to review in preparation
for the test. Tuesday's music class will be used to also review for this test.

The second grade will continue developing their melodic skills
during the month of February.
Songs, games and activities will prepare them for the Young At Heart program
on Thursday, February 8, and develop an understanding of.....

-treble clef and notes D and D
-melodic movements by step, skips and repeated notes

-melodic tones Do-Re-Mi-Sol-La
-quarter, half and whole notes and rests
-composition of a melody for a phrase or a poem

GRADE 1:
During the month of February students in first grade will continue activities using singing,
instrumentation and movement to develop skills inn tone color.
Students will develop an understanding of.....

-hightlighting words to a poem with various sound sources
-playing instruments to represent characters or objects in a story
-playing with dynamics of loud and soft

The month of February will continue developing skills in rhythm
and instrument identification for students in K5 music class.
Songs and activities will develop their understanding of:

-one and two sounds to the beat
-short and long sounds

-playing unpitched instruments to the rhythm of words
-play an ostinato (repeated rhythmic pattern) to the beat with a song

-walking and galloping meter
-patterns




Grade K-4:
Through singing and movement students in K-4 will continue exploring and
developing their harmonic skills during the month of February.
Students will develop an understanding of:

-steady beat (parades and guided movement)
-one and two sounds to the beat
-tah and ti-ti (short and loud sounds)

-walking and galloping meter
-fast and slow tempos
-play unpitched instruments to the rhythm of spoken and sung words

The classroom mouse puppet, Cheddar, will continue to help the children
understand the dynamics of soft and loud.
