SHINSEI HAPKIDO STUDENT MANUAL PART 1

SHINSEI HAPKIDO STUDENT MANUAL

Shinsei Hapkido Dojang Etiquette

DO JU NIM (FOUNDER) - JOSEPH B. LUMPKIN
KWAN JANG NIM (7th Dan) - DR. DARYL R. COVINGTON

When entering the dojang (Class training area), all students shall bow to the flags and then to the instructor if he is in the training area, and say SUN. If a student arrives late for class, he or she will assume the push up position and wait in that position for the instructor to give permission to join the class. Students should never enter the Dojang training area with their shoes on, unless they are shoes approved to be worn in class.
When the class officially begins, the instructor will clap his hands twice, at which time the instructor will give the order “Chul Sa” (Line Up). Students will again bow and line up according to rank. Then the instructor will give the following orders:
“Doe Rha” Turn to the flags
“Kyung Yea” Bow (to the flags).
“Doe Rha” Turn to face Instructor
“Kyung Yea” Bow
“An Jo” Sit Down
“Hae yo” Pray.
The Instructor will clap his hands after a period of prayer and Bible study say “E La Sutt” (Stand Up).The class will then proceed to follow the instructor in warm up, stretching, and training.

FURTHER ETIQUETTE:
1. No one may leave the dojang without the permission of the Instructor.
2. A student (Jeja) does not approach the head instructor directly, but instead approaches the highest ranking student. If that student cannot help, he then may approach an instructor, but the head instructor should never be approached directly.
3. Jeja will remain silent at all times unless instructed otherwise.
4. No chewing gum or candy allowed.
5. No smoking is allowed. Any student that smokes will not be allowed to demo or participate in tournaments. One cannot condition his or her body when they are defiling the temple of the Lord.
6. Uniforms (Doe Boke) should be clean and pressed. Students should be clean. No Jewelry, other than wedding rings, should be worn during training. Students will wear their FULL uniforms to EVERY class.
7. Students should keep the Dojang clean without being asked.
8. No Jeja (student) should ever turn his or her back on the instructor unless told to do so.
9. Students must warm up mentally and physically to help concentration and avoid injury.
10.Never ask to learn advanced techniques. The Instructor will teach you what He feels you are ready to learn. In the same manner, never ask to test, you will be told when you can test. It is disrespectful to ask for additional training or belt testing when you may not yet have perfected what you are practicing already. Do not asked to be trained in weapons. The
instructor will began your weapon training when you have shown responsibility.
11.All members should be addressed by the title Mr. or Mrs. and their last name. Instructors should ALWAYS, in and OUT of the dojang, be addressed as Sensei, If 7th Dan or Higher, the Sensei may also be addressed as KWAN JANG. Although Shinsei Hapkido is primarily built on Korean principles, we use the term Sensei instead of “Master”. This is do to the fact
that Jesus is often refered to as Master in the Scriptures.
Instructors must NEVER be addressed by their first names. It is a sign of disrespect.
The head of the Shinsei system will ALWAYS be addressed as DO JU NIM. Failure to abide by these simple principles of respect may result in forfieture of rank.
12.Class will dismiss by the Instructor clapping his hands twice, students will bow, then Instructor will clap again and call “Chul Sa” (Line Up), and a repeat of what took place to
start class, then, The Senior student will then say “Say Jak” (begin). All students, simultaneously, will say “Con Sa Hom Nee Dha” (Thank you for teaching us). The Head Instructor will reply “Chun Mun A Yoe”, and “Ahn Young Hee Kah Say Yo” (Go in peace)"Has son" (Dismiss) and the class will dismiss.
14.The Dojang is a place of learning and instruction for defense and mental training. We desire to develop the total person, as well as aid them in their walk with Christ. Members of the dojang are a family. They will help each other in and out of the dojang. There should be great pride in being part of the dojang family. This pride is to be reflected in how students conduct themselves inside and outside the dojang in their normal daily activities.
15.Students will remain quiet during class. Any student disrupting class will be removed immediately from the dojang.
