After my son died, I became part of a collection of wounded parents whose children died from substance abuse. Each one damaged by misplaced blame and guilt because they couldn't rescue their children. We became a family-in-grief, crying together and comforting one another. If you are a wounded parent, I offer my hand and my heart to help you find comfort and support.
The public must be educated to the reality of the War on Drugs. There are people who believe in the 'junkie' stereotype assuming these children were weak willed and deserved what was coming to them. Some are judgmental, uneducated, mean spirited or have blinders on.
Drugs created a helplessness in these children that is hard for outsiders to understand. Kicking the drug habit is difficult. Also, powerless are the secondary victims left behind to cope with the losses this dreadful disease has caused.
Each child, that dies, leaves behind parents and family members whose lives are now changed forever. They cannot erase the horror of that moment when they first heard that their child had died. The nightmares and the visions of their children dying continue to haunt them.
The book, BETWEEN TWO PAGES:Children of Substance, was born out of the love of GriefNet Parents for their children who lost their battle of addiction. We came together, tenuously, on the web site GriefNet. Telling our stories keeps our children alive, we never tire of hearing or telling them. The book has helped many grieving parents to know they are not alone, and also serves as a great educational tool for kids, parents, teachers, and government officials.
