ITHELL COLQUHOUN (1906-88)

A pioneer surrealist artist, experienced occultist, also writer and poet. Expelled at peak of art career in 1940 together with some other members of the London surrealist group who refused to conform to some dictats such as not belonging to bourgeois organisations, not being members of secret societies, not to exhibit in group exhibitions springing from an artistic bourgeois spirit, not to be on the editorial board of a non-surrealist publication &c. Ithell disagreed with all points and continued as an independent painter in London and Cornwall, and with touring exhibitions abroad.Books: The Crying of the Wind, Ireland; The Living Stones, Cornwall;Goose of Hermogenes; Sword of Wisdom - MacGregor Mathers and the Golden Dawn. Some poetry in her collections Osmazone and The Grimoire of the Entangled Thicket. With re-awakening of interest in Colquhoun, the Goose has been reprinted in 2003.
