CENTRAL ISLIP PARK/COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATE:
The Town of Islip has received bids on brand new windows and doors for our existing Clayton Street Recreation Center, and they will be installed shortly. The outside of the building will be painted as soon as the weather permits and bids are expected shortly for new floors and a new heating/ac system. An environmental survey was just conducted and the building does not have any kind of mold problem.
Historically, the Clayton Street Recreation and Senior Centers were part of the north colony of the State hospital, and are historic structures probably dating to about 1920.
The negotiations with the Long Island Sports and Cultural Center have still not been completed, but the Town expects a resolution soon. If approved, they will build a large indoor sports complex on public land south of Clayton Street. The building with over 100,000 sq feet of space would be used for indoor soccer, basketball, baseball, lacross and football. Fees for Central Islip residents would be 50% less than for other clients. In addition, the developer would provide 1.2 million dollars towards the building of a new recreation center for Central Islip and yearly fees would go towards the operation and support of the Center. The new Center will be north or south of Clayton Street depending on costs and funding availability.
Commissioner Murphy also announced that developers fees that have been and will be collected from the new shopping center and housing developers will total over 2 million dollars. These funds will also be available for our new Center. The Central Islip Civic Council is asking any residents who are interested in helping with our new park and community center effort to call Sandy or Annette to find out how you can help; or to get more information. 348-0669 x 17 or 13
CENTRAL ISLIP COMMUNITY WELCOMES TOURO
A Welcome to the Community Expo planned by Councilwoman Pam Greene was held on March 14th. Local non-profits and businesses set up tables to meet and greet over 800 faculty and students who are new to Central Islip. Channel 55 did a great spot on the event. Dean Larry Raful was an enthusiastic host and greeted all of the participants. A great benefit to our community is Touro's Public Service wing which provides free legal services to those in need of help with child support, divorce, disability, immigration and other issues.
TOWN CENTER NEWS:
The first of several new restaurants has opened at the Town Center on Carleton Avenue. Carraba's Italian Restaurant opened on February 15th. Owners Keith and Chris are thrilled to be part of the Central Islip community and are donating funds for a large banquet for the Central Islip School's athletic programs. Be sure to stop by for a great dinner any day. Carraba's opens at 4pm, except at 3pm on Saturdays.
The next restaurants to open will be a free standing Starbucks and a Subway.
If you haven't yet patronized the Center, be sure to check it out. So far, there's a Target, Home Depot, Dots Clothing store, Dollar Tree, GNC, Rockaway Bedding and, of course, Carrabas. Remember to
SHOP LOCALLY. You'll save gas and all of these stores and restaurants pay taxes to our school district.
