Welcome to Learn the Auto Basics! I hope you are ready and raring to go? I am!

A little about me:

My name is Sylvia Guillemette. I live in Northern Connecticut. I love automobiles! I love to teach people how to take care of their cars. It's exciting to see one's face light up when they have learned something new! I feel good about it.

I enjoy going to swap meets, auto shows, helping people with their cars, making suggestions, and working in the auto business. That's what I do and I love it!

TIP 1:

Installing your wiper blades
============================

There are many different cars out there, so installation may be different for each one. Also, it depends on the type of wiper blade that you buy.

All wipers are good. They vary in price from $4.99 and up(CT). When you go into the parts store, there are three different ways that you can find the blades that you need.

1. Take the measurement of the blade

2. Go in and browse through the book

3. Go to the counter and they will look up the vehicle specific size for your car. You will need to know year, make, and model. (Engine size doesn't matter on blades).

Some auto stores (such as Auto Zone) will offer a free service like wiper installation. If you are unsure as to how to install your wipers once you have purchased them, please ask for someone to show you how.

Once you have the wipers in your hand, you proceed outside to the vehicle in question. (If you can't lift the wiper blade to remove it, place the ignition key on to the power position, click on the wipers, and shut off ignition when the top of the wiper reachs the top of the glass.)

Pull gently away from the glass as not to break wiper arm. (Be Forewarned: these are expensive and not always readily available!) As you look at the top of the wiper arm connected to the blade you see that it is rounded at the top. Some have wide openings and some small. Sometimes it's only on one side.

On some wipers they have a pin to hold them into place. Those are a pain to get off and put on sometimes. (I have trouble with those myself.) If you have trouble, ask for help! It would not be good to break the pin off. Then you won't be able to put the blade on. If it's raining - you're out of luck!

The other way that they are found to be installed, is that they are clicked on. When looking at the top of the wiper arm, turn the wiper blade sideways. Look in the little place under the blade, there is a tiny tab. Squeeze the tab, and try to pull (gently) the wiper blade down over the arm and work it off.

The new blade should install easily. (If you are having trouble, please ask for assistance.) Now looking at the new blade and the top of the wiper arm - you'll see that it's curved or rounded. Slide the wiper blade arm into the hole above the rounded part of the blade. (ROUND TO ROUND) is how I teach this.

Once you have the blade positioned round side to round arm - pull it up until you hear it click into place. If it didn't click, it could fall off when using them and damage the wiper arm. Make sure that it has clicked into place. (Ask for assistance if you aren't sure you did it right.)

Then proceed with the other side.

REAR WIPERS can be a pain if they do not look like two pieces (the wiper arm and the blade). *Newer cars need to take it to the dealer when it looks like that.
