Historical Fiction
When I got to Bologna I went to school and stayed with a family. I went to their house, and it was a huge villa with four generations of the family. That’s the house that I first stayed in. Then I lived in an apartment studio in the second half of my trip.
The next day I was there, I went to the gym and was just playing a pick up game with some guys. Of course I was dominating them. So after they played, they asked them to play on their basketball team. So I had to say yes so I could have a chance to make friends and play basketball and I said he would play with them.
On my team I meet a new good friend named Franco and Franco owned a latteria (a milk and cheese store). I also had another friend on my team named Giuseppe, but everyone called him Bepe. His nickname was Gallo, which means the rooster. I also had another friend named Maurizio, and Maurizio’s basketball team was his rival team named Cisa. When
Maurizio’s team played them Maurizio’s whole goal was to shut me down. Maurizio didn’t even think of scoring.
When he was playing on his team Maurizio’s goal was to shut me down, but I still had twenty points a game. So one game we went to a farm town to play against Cassalecahio. In Cassalechio they grew fruits and vegetables near a river called Po. They team had very large fan support. The team’s whole town came out to cheer. The town’s people came to the game with pots and pans, they were banging them and making all sorts of noise. There was one old woman yelling out to me, tu sei uno bestio, which means you’re a Cyclopes. It was an intense game it was only 40 minutes but it seemed like 40 hours. We were battling with each other first we score then they assort back with some points. It was they most grueling 40 minutes of my life. Finally in the third quarter we got a stop and came down and hit a three. Then we were up five in mid third quarter, then ten as soon as we knew it we were up by twenty. It was now the fourth quarter and we were up twenty a smooth ride from here on out. Then I don’t know what happened to us but slowly our led diminished. As soon as we knew it, it there was only twenty seconds left and we were down by one. We called time out and went to the sidelines. In the huddle I just said give it to my and then stand back. So then Franco passed it in to me and stood back. I dribbled up and gave my defender a swift crossover and went right by him. 5,4,3…. I heard the crowd yelling I was almost there I jumped up and slam. Right with one second left I slammed it to win the game.
So the end of my trip came and I said goodbye to all of my friends. I told Maurizio to come visit him anytime. I wished I could stay longer but I had to go so I went back to Berkeley, California. About two months after I got home his friend Maurizio just came to the airport and called me. But I wasn’t home my roommate Jim Duffy was there and Jim came down to the airport at 4 a.m. to pick Maurizio up. But Jim is an outgoing guy and he loved to do stuff like that so he picked him up. So they were together at the apartment and they didn’t know how to communicate with each other. Then when I got back I was surprised to see Maurizio and we spent the next couple of weeks together hanging out until Maurizio had to leave.
