2.OVERVIEW

Booker T. Washington

Although Booker T. Washington is more well known as the author of the "Atlanta Compromise" and the major supporter of the "use of education to promote economic progress"(Reeser) he is also a great philanthropist and organizer. Among his many organizations include the Tuskegee Institute, which Washington greatly helped to expand and advance with his "ability to raise funds"(Reeser), and the National Negro Business League which helped to "further black advancement"("Washington...") through financial "independence and self-sufficiency"(Wright) of the individual Negro man. And even though he did not contribute directly to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), his "accomodat[ing]"(African) idea of the "acquiescence by blacks to whites in exchange for support in other ares"(Booker) was of great influence to the birth of the group. For if Washington had never introduced the idea into society there would have been no basis to establish the organization.
