9. ANALYSIS
I believe Booker T. Washington was a strong, and determined man whose main desire, beyond his own education, was the education of all African Americans. He went to great lengths, literally traveling five hundred miles by foot and by train to reach the Hampton Institute, to better himself and the rest of Black America. In my opinion Washington was able to shape the future of Negros everywhere with his autobiography, UP FROM SLAVERY. His views that all African Americans should be patient with attaining what they want and focus more on doing what they were able to do, physical labor, was an inspiration not only to Negros but to whites as well, for he knew that the South was practically built by blacks and would continue to need their agricultural assistance in maintaining the it. He was an outstanding spokesperson and not only gave people a positive opinion of blacks but of Southerners as well.
His humanitarian efforts, such as the establishment of Tuskegee University and of the National Negro Business League gave African Americans everywhere opportunities to advance themselves in a way he was never able to do. I think he was a prime example of what hard work and persistance can get a person, not just blacks but everyone of all races, culture and gender. His ideas applied to all and still do to this day. I admire Washington because of his courage to stand amongst an entire nation and speak his mind even though he knew many people would disagree with him. But even his critics used Washington's ideas to create new organizations to help minorities without even realizing it. I do not believe his writings affected literature as much as his views affected America and Washington was his own event.
People always talk about how Southerners are less intelligent than other people, I guess because of our accent or maybe because we lost the Civil War, in any case Booker T. Washington set an example for us. He showed that not only can we reap and sow our feilds and plow our gardens, but we can also gain an education, establish institutions, and we too can have dinner at the White House. Washington might have only been trying to reach Americans but he exibited to the world what you can achieve if you work hard enough for it. Besides, nothing can be appreciated fully unless it was difficult to attain. The American colonies had to fight a literal war to gain independence, Washington helped fight the war for African American independence.
