Gerry Slattery/The Burns Bros
Gerry Slattery is an immensely talented guitarist/singer/songwriter.
Born in Barking, Essex, England in 1962, Gerry has, since the early 80's, been making a living playing music in pubs and clubs in and around London.
Since 1986, he has fronted the very popular Burns Brothers. The name came about as the result of forming a duo with Mick Burns, a mad saxophonist.
Since 1997, Gerry's partner has been Bob Shuffle, from Hornchurch, Essex, who adds saxophone, rhythm guitar, lead vocals and backing vocals. Local punters associate Bob with his rendition of "Woolly Bully".
Always the musical arranger behind the act, Gerry makes backing tracks for the songs performed which sound more like the original than the original.
Gerry was a guitar-whiz by the time he was 16. He was initially taught by his brother Danny and inspired by The Ventures and The Beatles. Gerry's first band was Wayward, formed with school friends Mark(drums), Steve(bass)and Nigel(rhythm guitar). They wore Sgt. Pepper outfits and played clubs in and around Barking. Their "Have a Cup of Tea" tour ended with the band in disagreement. Gerry played as a solo artist for a while, later forming Clark Ellis and the Press and releasing a single "I'm Innocent".
Work in recent years has included guitar work with Boy George, subbing with The Rubettes (Gerry's teenage heroes) and album work with John Richardson of The Rubettes. In November 2000 he appeared in Walthamstow as guitar-player for Alvin Stardust and as a member of The Rubettes. In 1989 and 1990 he played gigs with his friends Lyndon and Brenda (The Clamps, now Breadline Shoes/LBD Blues Band) in Canada.
Anyone who has ever seen Gerry perform will attest to his talent and will ask how is it that he's not more well-known. That's the music-business, I guess.......
