WHAT A HUNT! I had such a wonderful time in Mt. Airy with my new family Jeff, Melissa, Richard, Dianne, Garrett, and Alex!

May 8, 2009 would make our second trip to Mt. Airy to go after a long beard (as they call it there). The first trip yielded no turkey but boy did we see a lot of deer. This trip however would be much different. We went down on a Friday and hunted Friday afternoon, but to no avail. So we got up REAL early Saturday morning, I mean real early....and got up with a super guide named Eddie Barr. Eddie took us to this beautiful place and we set up in a field next to a river. No sooner had we set up the blind and two deer stepped out of the woods (no more than 7 feet from the blind...WOW!) Then Eddie started a roosted hen call......and then.......GOBBLE! We heard him off in the distance, probably about 1,000 yards on the roost. He called again several times and suddenly the Gobbler was on the ground....gobbling for every breath! HOW EXCITING! Eddie kept calling little by little and the turkey, well he kept gobbling! Eddie said, hopefully the next time we hear him he will be closer....and boy was he, in fact only about 250 yards away. And then we saw him, his blue and changing red head running down the road just above the hill. Eddie said, "Amber get your gun ready, and just shoot through the mesh on my blind." I said, "What, shoot your blind?" "Yeah, shoot it", he said. 80 yards...then 70...then 60...the entire time Gobble, Gobble, Drum, Drum, Strut, Strut, THUMP, THUMP....the last two were my heart not the turkey!
Finally he was within 40 yards when Eddie said, Amber take your shot! STEADY, BREATH, BIBLE VERSE...."I can do all things through Christ Who....BANG!
Turkey on the Ground!!!!!!! We were jumping up and down, high fives, praising the Lord, hugging, tearing up Eddie's tent some more....What a joy.
The turkey had around a 9" beard and around 3/4" spurs. What a HUNT!
I would like to thank my mom, dad, & brother for their support and Jeff, Mel, Richard, & Dianne & the boys & of course Eddie and his wife, June for making this hunt special. Also thanks to Charles who also tried his best to get me a bird. Also thanks to the NC Handicap Sportsmen for putting us all together, especially Ed Mays (President of NCHS)! And most of all thanks to my Lord and Savior, which if not for Him I would have nothing, but because of Him I have all things!
I love you all and I really appreciate the opportunity! I LOVE MT. AIRY! Move over Andy Griffith!
