"Boxers landed a bomb!"
by Lenny Megliola
North Attleboro 10-0, Plymouth North 9-6, Whitman-Hanson 22-9, New Bedford 11-6, and Andover 14-3.To tune up for all that Brockton crunched Newton North 14-5 and Bridgewater-Raynham 27-7 in the last two regular season games. The Boxers had no weakness in the order, one through nine.
And this was what Milford was going up against. The Scarlet Hawks got the Boxers attention with two runs in the top of the first, but everybody gawked at Nick Duguay's mighty grand slam off the football scoreboard in the bottom of the inning. And for those who didn't know, didn't understand, this was what Brockton was all about. Pouring it on. The grand slam was the start.
"Way to turn up the pressure!"
came the cry from the Brockton bench during a three-run eight inning after their four-run seventh. Relentless, these Boxers, winning their first state title since 1981, about the time these kids were conceived. And when it was over, they celebrated big-time, and Milford really didn't want to watch, but had to. The best team won, one-game tourney.
Finally, Charlie Stand grumbled, "Pack it up. We're outta here."
Time to head out, on a quiet bus, but intime they would all get to know and feel what Chuck Martino already knew. It was something, really something, to be here, playing the last game of the high school baseball season.
