Brian S. Asdell

biography

Born in Xenia, Ohio in 1964, Brian Shane Asdell is the second son of a military family and has lived and traveled throughout the United States and several other countries. He moved to San Diego over 30 years ago and having artistic talents from an early age, took an enthusiastic plunge into art classes from pre-school to college, ranging from graphic arts to photography and furniture design to architecture. His main inspiration now comes form 20th Century Modern Art, Architecture and Design and he currently works with one of San Diego's prominent contemporary architects.
"I knew that one day I would be a painter, but I had never taken any formal classes other than drawing and design basics. I always loved abstract art, but never understood how an artist could put something that had never existed in any other tangible form before, onto a surface as a piece of art. Then one day I went out and purchased some basic supplies and I began to paint".
Without any "formal" training, Brian began painting in the fall of 2001. He greatly admires the minimalist non-representational art of early 20th Century masters such as Piet Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich and Josef Albers and followed the path of their heritage into the late 20th century to the great works of Barnett Newman, Ellsworth Kelly and Ad Reinhardt.
"Now, at the beginning of the 21st Century, I feel that I am carrying on the tradition of minimalist art that subconsciously stimulates the mind through color, harmony and rhythm. Everyone who sees these paintings will walk away with a new and unique experience. For me, that is what art is all about."
