Historically, one of their most important uses has been for health purposes. Herbal usage dates back to the Sumerians close to 3,000 B.C. Around 100 A.D., the Greek physician Dioscorides compiled De Materia Medica, the first European treatise on the use of about 500 plants.
Many companies don't recognize the meaningful differences between synthesized preparations and natural substances, but traditional herbalist's oppose the use of synthetics in lieu of the natural alternatives, even when the characteristics of natural herbs can be chemically duplicated. The synthetics, they contend, lack many of the supplemental ingredients found in natural herbs - ingredients that can have significant benefits.
