THE GEORGE GRIMES FAMILY OF AUSTIN COUNTY TEXAS by Betty Meischen

CHAPTER SIX
THE GRIMES FAMILY COMES TO TEXASAnother family that came to Texas in those early years was to have quite an impact on the future generations of Austin County. When George Grimes brought his family to Texas from Stewart Co. Tennessee, he brought with him five females. In a time when there were very few eligible females for all those pioneer bachelors to marry, the coming of the Grimes' family was indeed welcome to the area males. Altogether, George Grimes fathered eight daughters, two of which were born in Texas. In colonial Texas, if a man was married, he could get 3/4 of a league more land than if he were single. Thomas Bell, Charles Benton, James Bell, Adam Kuykendall, Benjamin Granville, Benjamin Harrison, and William John L. Sapp, all early Austin Colony pioneers were to take advantage of the opportunity to marry these eligible young ladies. Not only did many of the pioneer families of the Bellville area arise from these unions, the Grimes sons also did much to participate in the Texas battle for Independence and also in future battles with the Indians and in the Confederate army.
The history of the Grimes/Greim family can be traced back to the immigrant ancestor Valentin Greim who came to America from Germany in 1740. Valentin had three known sons who came to America from Germany: Adam, Jacob and Sebastian. According to several researchers, the line of George Grimes descends from Adam Greim, son of Valentin. Hubert N. Grimes relates, "The Grimes (Greim) family came from a small town in Southern Germany named Unkenbach. It is halfway between Kaiserslauten and Manheim and just south of Worms. I met a lady from Manheim and she told me it is just a wide spot in the road with five houses today. Adam Greim arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Anderson with brother Sebastian in 1751. Their other brother JACOB and their father Valentine arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Loyal Judith in 1740/1. Sebastian stayed in Pennsylvania but Jacob and Adam went to Davidson County, NC, formerly Rowan Co. The Spurgin tax list of 1773 lists Jacob with sons Adam and Sebastian. Sebastian went to Wilkes Co. NC, He had a son named Jacob who went to Tennessee. Many of his family are still there."
An interesting account of the Greim family sent to the author comes from the Middletown PA weekly genealogy column written by Sehuylee Brossiman, The Press and Journal, Wednesday, August 31, 1983:
"The Greim family of Berks County is deeply rooted in Tulpehocken, Penn and Bern townships. In a book, " A Picture Story of the House of Derr," by James F. Spears (1949) about the famous tinsmith Peter Derr, it is stated that Peter created a "heraldic sunflower motif for the House of Greim in 1811 that was destined to bloom far into the century." The master cabinet makers, Greim of Penn and Tulpehocken townships, "brought of rural Berks County the Chippendale influence, possibly for the first time." Robert Grimes, a current resident of Reading, has pointed out that many later members of the family were skilled patternmakers in the foundries of Reading. The immigrant ancestor of the Greim family was Valentin Greim, b ca 1690, who arrived at Philadelphia on 25 Oct 1740 on the "Loyal Judith," with his son Jacob. On 25, Aug 1751 his sons Adam and Sebastian, arrived on the "Anderson" Two possible other sons whose existence is unsubstantiated were George and John, ca 1717 to ca 1796 who is said to have been married to Barbara Webber on 5 Apr 1737. There is no known record of Valentin's wife in America.....
Sebastian Greim b 1729 son of Valentin is probably the ancestor of most of the Greim family remaining in Berks Co. Tracing his descendancy has been complicated by..(can't read) Known children of Sebastian include 910 Anna Marie m. 20 Nov 1775 to Jacob Fiess (2) Ludwig m. 25 1773 to Elizabeth Fischer (3) Christian (4) Christina Cordula 17 Jun 1753 m. 10 Nov 1778 to Samuel Umbenhauer (5) Abraham b 21 Jan 1760 m. 29 Apr 1788 to Christina Geiss b. 13 Jan 1768 d. 27 Nov 1837."
He goes on to tell about the Ludwig line in detail.
In the book Pennsylvania German Pioneers by Ralph Beaver Strassburger, LLD Vol I 1727-1773
Genealogical Publishing co, Inc, 1980 is the following ship's list:
"At the Court House in Philadelphia Nove 25th 1740...The Palatines whose Names are
underwritten imported in the Ship Loyal Judith, Lovell Paynter, Commander, from Rotterdam, but
last from deal.....Vallentin (O) Greem Jacob (J) Greem
" At the court House at Philadelphia, Tuesday 25 August 1751... The foreigners whose names are
underwritten, imported in the Ship Anderson, Hugh Campbell, Master from Rotterdam & last from
Cowes, did this day take and subscribe the usual & foregoing qualifications...Sebastian Greim, Adam Greim are listed.
According to various sources and quoted directly from Peter Hucks, "Jacob is listed with Adam on the 1778 Tax List for Rowan County, North Carolina. This is my proof that Jacob belongs to Adam. Adam died in Rowan County (Davidson Co. now) and is buried there." Valentin Greim was born about 1690 in the Palatinate area of Europe. He arrived in Philadelphia Pennsylvania on October 25, 1740 on the ship "Loyal Judith" with his son Jacob Greim, age 18. Valentin was age 50 at the time. Valentin Greim had three known sons Adam Greim who was born about 1720 in Germany and died October 7, 1794 in Rowan County N. C., Jacob Greim, b. abt 1722 in Germany, d. 1796 in Rowan county, NC. and Sebastian Greim who was born about 1729 in Germany. Adam Greim arrived in Pennsylvania on August 25, 1751 with his brother Sebastin Greim. Adam came to Rowan County, North Carolina by 1773-1774. Adam is buried at the Bethany Church Cemetery, Davidson County, North Carolina. He married Anna Barbara in Rowan County, N.C.. He married ANNA BARBARA and had two sons (known). They were: JOHN GEORGE3 GRIMES who was born October 11, 1752 in Pennsylvania and JACOB GRIMES who died in 1825, in Robertson County, Tennessee. Jacob Grimes was first married to Mary and then he was married to Catherine Miller in 1780 who was the daughter of Frederick Miller and wife Catherine ? Miller. Catherine died before 1789 in Rowan County, N.C.Virginia Crilley’s research indicates that the parents of George Grimes were Jacob Grimes and Catherine Miller. Catherine’s father, Frederick Miller, deeded land in Rowan Co. NC to his grandchildren, including our George Grimes. Apparently, Catherine was the only living child of Frederick Miller at the time of the will and listed are the names of his grandchildren who were living on the Plantation.

In this will is listed John Gardner but take note that he is deceased by 1790. James Gardner further mentions his three deceased BROTHERS as William, Martin and John. He does not mention John as being one of his children however, it is possible that the deceased John Gardner may be the father of our John Gardner.

William Ruffin James (X) GardnerNotes (mine)
The John Gardner referred to in this will was deceased by 1790.
John Gardner testified in 1813 in a Stewart County TN court that Edwin James and Emanuel James were brothers. He therefore cannot be the John Gardner listed here.
James Gardner in the will states that Patience James is his daughter.
Patience Gardner married Emanuel James in 1788 in Bertie County NC (from records)
James Gardner in his will states that his brothers are: William, John and Martin Gardner
James does not mention a John as being his son so Patience Gardner is probably not the sister of John Gardner but possibly a first cousin.
Elizabeth Gardner testified that Edwin James (brother of Emanuel James) was her brother so therefore it is probable that Patience Gardner was her sister-in-law.
Our John Gardner that married Elizabeth James there fore may be the son of William, John or Martin.** Re: John Gardner & Eliabeth James Date: Tue, 03 Oct 2000 From: arrb@bellsouth.net
I have not made all the connections and am still piecing the tidbits of information together. I am attaching the will of Ann Standley that you may find interesting. The Pervishow may me a mistake and maybe Pervis. The assumption is based on the the James Gardner will that mentions Allen Pervis as executor. I have not followup on the James connection. My conclusion is that John Gardner was a first cousin to Patience Gardner James and that William, Martin or John Gardner the brothers of James Gardner. What I find interesting are the names. The name Baliss House and Josiah Harrell are names that appear in Sumner County, Tennessee records but I'll have to check to be sure. I'll send you some other wills that mention Gardner that might lead to other places to look, as soon as they are typed.--BagwellWILL BOOK B, Page 38 17 June 1725
Bertie Co., North Carolina Will of ANN STANDLEY, deceasedIn the name of God, Amen. I, Ann Standley of the county of Bertie, and province of North Carolina, calling to mind the mortality of my body, and yet it is appointed for all women once to die, I do make this my last will and testament as followeth. First of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it, and as to the worldly estate that it hath pleased God to give to me, I give and bequeath in manner and form following. I give and bequeath unto my sister ELIZABETH JERNIGAN, ten pounds proclamation money. But secondly, I leave my three negroes, Pegg, Mingo and Nannie, with all my household goods and chattles, to be equally divided between MARTIN GARDNER and JOHN GARDNER, and JAMES GARDNER, my brothers and sisters ANNE SPARKMAN and JANE PERVISHOW. It is the true intent and meaning of this my last will and testament that if my brothers or sisters or any other claiming under or for them, or any of them shall be anyways discontented at this my last will and testament, so as to bring any suit such person so offending shall forfeit all their part of my estate and be cut off with one shilling sterling, and therefore shall have been void, and theirs shall be divided among my other brothers and sisters by JOSEPH HOLLAND and JOHN GARDNER, who I do constitute, appoint and empower to be my true and lawful Executors of this my last will and testament, and I do hereby utterly disallow and disannull all and every other former will and testament. In witness whereof, I have set my hand fixed my seal this seventeen hundred and twenty-five, and in the fifteenth year of the reign of our Sovereign King George the Third. Test: BENJAMIN CARTER

156. ALVOR7 GRIMES (ROBERT FELIX6, ANDREW JACKSON5, GEORGE4, JACOB3, ADAM2 GREIM,VALENTIN1) was born December 06, 1893 in Groesbeck, Limestone County, Texas, and died April 25, 1970 in Hawkins, Texas. He married PANSY OLIVE POLK June 18, 1921 in George Reagan Home, Groesbeck, Texas, daughter of LEONIDUS POLK and MYRTLE GARDNER.
George Grimes continues to be listed on the Sumner Co. tax list in 1811, and purchased land in Stewart Co., moved there, selling it in 1819. Stephen F. Austin's census taken in 1830 shows that George Grimes age 46 and Wife Dicey 43 arrived in Austin’s second colony in 1827 with 4 male children and 5 female children and listed his occupation as farmer. Gina Stevens of San Marcos compiled a family history on the Grimes family in which she states that George Grimes was born in Rowan Co. North Carolina in 1781 and his wife Eurydice "Dicey" was born in North Carolina in 1784. They were married in Tennessee by the year 1804. Eurydice died at her log cabin home at Nelsonville, Austin County, Texas on September 1, 1836 and George married again to Tracy Yerkins on 9-27-1838 but had no children by her. In the 1840 Census, he is listed as having 1111 total acres of land and 5 head of cattle. George Grimes died in November of 1849 and was buried in a one acre family cemetery plot on the family plantation at Nelsonville, nine miles west of Bellville.
According to Virginia Crilley, descendant of Frederick Miller Grimes, "George and Dicey left behind three little graves, Catherine, Jacob and John. Dicey’s mother, Elizabeth (James), had died around 1812, but her father, John Gardner who had remarried, remained in Tennessee as well as 3 married sisters with families and an older brother, Stephen. Celia and her husband, Griwold Latimer had moved prior to 1820 to Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas on the Mississippi River below Memphis."
On May 5, 1819, George sold 40 acres of land in Stewart Co. to Edwin Smith for $250.00. He is also listed in the 1820 census for that county. The will of Jacob Grimes (George’s father) dated Nov 1825 indicates that George’s portion had previously been granted in money and goods. At the time of their move from Tennessee, William C. was 8 years old, G.W. 11, Frederick M. 22, Margaret 14, Nancy 15, and Abigail 17.
"By the Spring of 1836, Abigail had married Thomas Bell but had no children, Margaret had married his brother James Bell and had blessed George and Eurydice with three granddaughters, Rebecca 3, Dicey 2 and Baby Jane. Nancy had married Charles Benton who died in 1835, giving them their first grandson, George Benton born 1831. Nancy would marry again to an Englishman, Benjamin Granville, producing more children.
"In January of 1842, Dicy’s father John Gardner of Stewart County, TN, left to his grandchildren in his will $200 each "to the children of his deceased daughters, Dicey, Susanna, and Celia." Perhaps this was the reason that Frederick Miller Grimes sued his father in Probate court June 1849, accusing him of not dividing Eurydice’s estate among her children. George had sold two small parcels of land, so perhaps Fred thought he was going to sell off the property and thus affexct the inheritance. The result was a complete inventory of the household possessions. Before the conclusion, George himself dies, Nov. 15, 1849. The land is divided into 5 parcesl and sold on April 1, 1851 together with the Negro woman Minty (about 40 years old. Family members: Andrew J. Grimes, Thomas Bell (Abigail’s husband) purchased two of the parcels...the other three were by neighbors. Thus the matter concluded April, 1852 with each sibling getting their share of monies from the estate. Martha Ann Sapp’s county is not identified; William C was in Burleson County, Frederick in Bell, and all the others residents of Austin Co."**CrilleyChildren of George and Eurydice Garner Grimes:
Jacob Grimes died at age three by drowning.
John Grimes died at age 16 of a fever.
Catherine Grimes died at age 8 kicked to death by a horse.
Frederick Miller Grimes was born in Sumner County, Tennessee, May 25, 1805. On March 2, 1831 Frederick Grimes received title to one-fourth of a league of land, one half in Austin County and the other half in Washington County. Frederick Miller Grimes belonged to the Mill Creek Volunteers of the Republic of Texas Army (July 1, 1836-Oct 1, 1836)and was left to guard the Baggage at Harrisburg during the battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. "Obeying the instructions of General Houston the following officers and men remained at the camp of the Texas Army established opposite Harrisburg. There the sick were attended by their comrades who also guarded the baggage and acted as the rear guard of the main army. Listed were George W. Grimes, Frederick Miller Grimes, Adam Kuykendall, 3 William Smiths, Benjamin Grenville, Thomas B. Stephenson all from Gibson Kuydendall's Company.
According to Crilley, Frederick Miller Grimes fought with Capt Simms in 1833 against the Hueco Indians and was actively involved in the Texas Revolution, The Battle of Quintana (Oct 26, 1835), the Siege of Bexar (Dec 7, 1835) of which Thomas Bell his brother-in-law also participated and under Capt R. McNutt and Gipbson Kuykendall in the battle of San Jacinto. From a copy of the Collections in The Center for American History, The University of Texas at Austin:
Frederick M. Grimes was left to guard the baggage "Obeying the instructions of General Houston, the following officers and men remained on 4-21-1836 at the camp of the Texas Army established opposite Harrisburg. There the sick were attended by their comrades who also guarded the baggage and acted as a rea guard of the main army."

Mr. Grimes fought the Carancahuas on the coast and served in Captain Bartlett Sims' Company in the battle with the Huecos at the Hueco Village in 1833. In this battle Thomas Gray was killed. Later Mr. Grimes lived near Nashville, in Robertson's Colony in what is now Milam County. Mr. Grimes also stated that he participated in the battle of Velasco, June 26, 1832. On page 42 of the army rolls in the General Land Office he is shown as a member of Captain Gibson Kuykendall's Company that was detailed to guard the baggage at the camp opposite Harrisburg, April 21, 1836. Apparently he did not apply for the 640 acres of donation land due him for that service. Later in the year 1836, he joined Captain H. N. Cleveland's Company of Mill creek Volunteers. Frederick Grimes was issued Bounty Certificate No. 531 for 320 acres of land, July 11, 1849 for having served in the army from March 1 to May 31, 1836 and bounty Certificate No. 532 for 320 acres for his services from July 1 to October 1, 1836.
On February 1, 1838 Mr. Grimes was married to Elmira Susan Farley, who was born July 15, 1820 and died August 19, 1889. She was a daughter of Henry and Nancy White Farley. Mr. Farley was one of the colonists of Sterling C. Robertson. Elmira and her sister inherited a claim that her father had made for land in Robertson Co. before his death in 1832. The 1850 Census of Austin County list #25 F.M. Grimes, 41, farmer 4073 Tenn., Elmira 30, Al., Mary 11, Tx, Martha 8, Thomas 6, Samuel 5, Henry 2. In 1852 Fred and Elmira moved to Coryell County being among the first settlers near Fort Gates being among the first settlers near Ft. Gates. On record is that Frederick Grimes in 1874 was 70 years old and that he moved to Coryell County, Texas. Mr. Grimes died December 18, 1889 while a member of the Texas Veterans Association. Mr. and Mrs. Grimes are buried in the old White Church cemetery in Blooming Grove, Navarro County, in marked graves. Frederick Grimes is listed as having sat on the first grand jury in Austin County.
Two of their sons, Thomas and Henry, were tragically killed as young men, in Waco, Tx. in October 1869. They had just completed a cattle drive, and were celebrating the coming marriage of Thomas. After leaving the saloon, they rode around the square shooting their pistols into the air. The Reconstruction period Sheriff and men pursued them as they rode up Austin Avenue, and the two were killed.**CrilleyChildren of Mr. and Mrs. Grimes were (1) Mary Ann (b.8-1-1839 Austin Co. d. 11-29-1930 m. Abigail Grimes born Sumner County, Tenn. in 1810 married Thomas Bell, co-founder of Bellville in 1828 in Bellville, Texas. (See Bell history.) No children of record were born to this union.
Nancy Amelia Grimes was born in Tennessee in 1812. She first married Charles Benton who received an original Spanish Land Grant in Austin County. She had a son by Benton by the name of George Benton. Charles Benton died in 1835, possibly killed during the early skirmishes of the Texas Revolution. On 8-24-1837, Nancy then married an Englishman, Benjamin Granville who had come to the colony in 1834. After Granville's death, she married once more to Thomas McGehee 8-1868.. (See Granville History) Nancy Grimes Benton Granville's daughter Abigail married Miles Young 5-7-1853 in Austin County. From this union Margaret Zillah Young was born. M. Zillah Young married Perry R. Cloyd on 6-16-1880 in Austin County. To this union Raymond Cloyd was born. He married Maud Barrett and they had a daughter, Martha Sibyl Cloyd Smith, the mother of the author.
Margaret C. Grimes was born in 1814 in Tennessee and was first married to Robert Ray on 10-21-1829. Ray was born in New York around 1800 and acording to Crilley had been in Texas since 1824. She then married James Bell in Washington County (See Bell History) Margaret Grimes and James Bell had a daughter, Rebecca Bell who married Newitt Cloyd. They had a son Perry Cloyd. Perry Cloyd married Margaret Zillah Young (his cousin) whose son was Raymond Cloyd. Raymond Cloyd married Maud Barrett and their daughter, Martha Sibyl Cloyd Smith is the mother of the author.
George Washington Grimes was born in 1816 and married Martha Williams in 1841. On record at the General Land Office in Austin is a military record of George W. Grimes, a claim for pension, in which it is stated that "served in the army of the Republic of Texas from March 1st 1836 at 55 years of age to the 31st day of may 1836 in Captain McNutt's Co then to Captain Gibson Kuykendall in Col. Burleson's Regiment. George W. Grimes was also at the camp opposite Harrisburg during the battle at San Jacinto. The 1850 Census of Austin County lists G.W. Grimes 29, M Farmer, Kentucky, Martha Grimes 29 Ark., Elizabeth 15, Ark., Mary 13, Ark., Frederick 2, Tx.
William C. Grimes, born 1819 in Stewart County, Tennessee and married Mary Riggs. in 1844.
Susan Grimes was born in Stewart County, Tennessee in 1821 and married Adam Kuykendall in 1838.** According to George Grimes' will she had a son by this union whose name was Amos Kuykendall. J. Hampton Kuykendall became the guardian of Amos Kuykendall according to George Grimes Will. Susan Grimes second marriage was to William Northcross in 1842 whom she divorced, and then she married Wright Alford, in 1845. All of her marriages were in Austin County.
Andrew Jackson Grimes was born in 1825 in Stewart County Tennessee and married Ellen Nichols in 1847. Moved to Limestone County, Tx,
Samuel James Grimes, was the first child to be born to the Grimes in 1827 in Austin County Texas. He married Caroline Kahan, in 1849 in Austin County.
Martha Ann Grimes was born 1830 in Austin County. She married George Longley in Austin County in 1844 and then married William J.L. Sapp in 1846. "In the late 1830's one John F. Sapp was said to have been operating a hotel on the road from San Felipe to upper Texas "where Adolph Necker's road now crosses the railroad tracks." This would place it where the community of Peters later grew up. Sapp died in 1841, and James Ervin and his family lived on Sapp's place until moving to Bellville. On September 12, 1844, James Ervin was appointed by the Commissioners Court to work his hands on Road 1 Sapps Crossing to Centre Hill." (Frizzel, p. 15) This man could have possibly been William Sapp's father.
Lucinda Grimes was born in 1832 in Austin County and married Benjamin Harrison in 1846.

THE KUYKENDALLS: AN OLD THREE HUNDRED FAMILYSusan Grimes first husband Adam was a member of the Kuykendall family which is also mentioned as one of the first settlers in Austin County. In 1823, Abner Kuykendall settled above the junction of Mill creek and the Brazos. "It is said that on January 1, 1822 Abner Kuykendall released several milch cows brought from Arkansas on the banks of a stream which he named New Year's Creek" (from the book All Our Yesterdays: A Brief History of Chappell Hill compiled by Mr & Mrs. Nate Winfield, c. 1969 Texian Press, Waco, Tx. pg 5) Adam Kuykendall was one of those left to guard the sick and baggage on April 21, 1836 at Harrisburg during the battle of San Jacinto. He was in Gibson Kuykendall's company. Deed records dated 11-1837 show that Adam Kuykendall sold J.H. Money 1/3 league (1481 acres) on the West fork of Mill Creek "my headright to which no title has been issued" for $1000. On November 12, 1838 Adam Kuykendall sold to John H. Money for $1550 276 3/4 acres in Washington County, Tx on the waters of New Year's creek, being lot 7 in decree of probate, being 1 equal part of 1 equal 1/8 of 1/2 league granted to Abner Kuykendall. It appears that since he received this land in probate, he was a son of Abner Kuykendall. In the 1826 Census Abner Kuykendall is listed as over 50 with 4 male 1-7, 2 males 7-16, 2 males 16-25, 1 female 1-7, 2 females 7-16, 1 female 16-25. Robert Kuykendall is listed as being 25-40, his wife 25-40 with 7 children under 16.
Another document shows that the Kuykendalls were involved in the struggle for Texas' Independence. The arrangement of the military was decided at a general convention of delegates representing the citizens of Texas at San Felipe in 1832. There were six districts represented: San Felipe (Wyly Martin), Mill Creek (John Connell & Samuel C. Douglas), Viseca (J.E. Groce & Wm. Robinson) Hildalgo, Alfred and Bastrop. Each District would have its own company and there would be a total of twelve companies arranged with one captain, 3 lieutenants, 4 sergeants, 3 corporals. The 1st Battalion represented those first six districts. Abner Kuykendall was captain of the first company with Jesse Grimes, lieutenant (signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence), Leonard Groce, lieutenant (son of Jared E. Groce), Thomas Borden, 1st sergeant (brother of Gail Borden, Borden Milk), Brazilla Kuykendall, second sergeant, York, Parker and F. Holland.
"...in a few days the force encamped near Anahuac was joined by Captain Abner Kuykendall and a company of from forty to sixty men from Austin's colony." Judge Robert McAlphin Williamson: Texas' Three-Legged Willie by Duncan W. Robinson c.1948 by Texas State Historical Association. "It was Williamson (Three-Legged Willie) who held up to the admiration of the public the account of a surgical feat in which Captain Robert Kuykendall totally blind for several years from a supposed depression of the brain was "skillfully operated upon and trepanned" by Dr. Robert Peebles. (Ibid)
J. Hampton Kuykendall was taken on as an apprentice to William Barret Travis in his law practice at San Felipe. Travis wrote in his diary "Made contract with J. Hampton Kuykendall with approbation of his father to live with me three years--& study law & help me in my office." (Turner, p.55) As mentioned in the opening chapter, J. Hampton Kuykendall kept a record of Sam Houston's march to San Jacinto and is one of the main sources for the description of the events that happened on Houston's retreat and re-organization of the Texas army. In George Grimes will, J. Hampton Kuykendall is mentioned as the guardian of Amos Kuykendall, son of his deceased daughter Susan Grimes and Adam Kuykendall. J. Hampton appears to be the brother of Adam Kukendall or Amos’ uncle. After the death of Abner Kuykendall, this petition was filed in Austin County:
"Your petitioners, Brazilla Kuykendall, William K, Abner K, Marion wife of James Cooper, Gibson K. for himself and as curator for J. Hampton K. (minor) and tutor for Wyatt H.K., Elizabeth K. Book A of the Spanish land records in the Austin County Courthouse entry #46 shows that George Grimes received an original grant of land on September 4, 1827 a league of land on Mill Creek. Grimes obtained title to this league of land through Austin's second empresario contract on March 16, 1831.
On January 2, 1830 at San Felipe de Austin, Grimes applied for land to Commissioner General Juan Antonio Padilla, stating that he had come to Texas with his family and had been admitted in Austin's colony. The steps required to complete the title were not finished because Padilla was removed from his office. No land was obtained by virtue of this document which is in Spanish. Grimes signed the document with an X, he apparently not knowing how to write his name. (None of his family apparently had received an education because almost all of them signed with an X.)
On June 18, 1834 George Grimes sold to Elisha Roberts half of the league of land that he had been granted on Mill Creek. Witnesses: William Barret Travis, David G. Burnet, Fred. Grimes, J.H. Kuykendall.
On March 6, 1839 the Board of Land Commissioners for Austin County certify that George Grimes was entitled to One labor of land (177 acres) as part of his headright. On July 14, 1848, Grimes transferred to J. C. Lee all rights, title and claim to headright certificate #88 for the consideration of $50. This land was located in Travis County surveyed on 12-27-1848.
8-13-1839 George Grimes sold to Frederick Grimes one labor from the George Grimes grant. Witness: Hampton Kuykendall
7-16-1844 George Grimes sold to John Bell 125 acres of the G. Grimes grant
4-7-1848 GG "to my son Andrew J. Grimes for $1.00 a tract being part of league granted to George Grimes and being 185 acres of land. Witness: NW Bush, John Coker

12-26-1848 GG sold to Elias Elliott 252 acres of the G Grimes grant
2-21-1849 GG sold to WK Bellaman 92 acres of the Grimes survey
4-1-1851 Thomas Bell purchased from the estate of George Grimes 125 1/2 acres from the Fitzgibbons survey. On the same date, 108 acres was sold to wm Frampton, 121 acres to a McMillian, 183 acres to A.J. Grimes of the Grimes survey and 183 acres to Benjamin Harrison. In the succession records dated June 22, 1838 at the Austin County Courthouse, the last will of Stephen F. Austin, James F. Perry, Executor, mentions the land that Austin owned at the time of his death was on the east bank of the west fork of Mill Creek abutting the George Grimes league.
George Grimes died in November of 1849 and was buried on his homestead at Nelsonville. Field notes done on 4-12-1853 are on file of the survey of the gravesite in the Grimes league. On April 1, 1851 Nathan Bush, administrator of the George Grimes Estate, conveyed a tract on Mill Creek on which Grimes resided at the time of his death, land having been divided into parcels and a negro woman Monty to Wm. Frampton for $518.16 totaling 108 acs. Notes for Conrad Lingle: 1727 :
The 12th of February, twins are born, namely first Anna Elisabeth Baerin, in the afternoon around 3 o'clock, and half hour later, her sister Anna Christina Baerin. The parents, Johann Georg Baer, 'ad differentiam caterorium', Bidebach's stepson, and the mother Anna Christina, nee Bannebeckerin, her husband's married wife, both of Lutheran religion, and they had there two twins baptized since they both were frail, the next day, the 13th of the same month, a Thursday at noon by myself in the living room of there house in Ungstein. For the first, the Godparents are the honorable Hans Nicolaus Stayer, community chairman and master wheel wright here, and his virtuous wife, Anna Elisabetha, both Lutheran religion, and for the second, the Godparents are the modest Conrad Lingel, Reformed citizen and resident, here, and his virtuous wife, Anna Christina, Lutheran religion, the father's step sister, nee Bidebachin. Both of these children died.
Conrad Lingle‘s occupation was a farmer. Conrad’s wife Anna Christina Bidebach died in 1734 when she was pregnant after 15 years of marriage of which they had two sons and two daughters. It states in the note below that they were married in the year 1719. 1"The 5th of January, the day before Three Kings Day, in the morning at 9 o'clock died an unexpected however honorable death, the christian spouse Anna Christina Lingel in her high pregnancy and with her child in her womb. She was born into this world in the year 1676, here, by Christian parents, and she was then baptized and raised in the Lutheran faith. Her father was the former chairman Casper Bidebach, from here, of Reformed religion and the mother was Anna Catharina, the fathers married wife, of Lutheran religion, and when she lived through the year 1719, in the beginning of the same, she was married with the Reformed farmer Conrad Lingel......and with the blessing of her church she lived with him in marriage for 15 years and brought forth two sons and two daughters and it is God's will, the oldest daughter Anna Maria, due to her mother's foresight, has still been confirmed in the Lutheran church, and the children should stand by the father, as it is Gods will. Otherwise she was a very good mother to her children, and a friendly neighbor and even though her body was frail, she was a deligent housewife and above all a good christian, who gladly went to church and diligently took part in communion, and the deceased went to church the last time on Christmas and I saw her a second time, especially since I saw that she was with one foot in the grave. God kept her body and soul in hope that he also in the future takes her to him, after she lived in this world for 38 years less 4 months. She was buried the 6th of the same month, on Three Kings Day." She was buried on January 06, 1733/34 in Germany1
Marriage Notes for Conrad Lingle and Anna Bidebach:

I have no proof that this Catherine Miller (7) was the wife of Jacob Grimes and I have to discredit the lineage through Wendell Miller. I suspect that the father of Wendell 1 may have been Frederick Miller in Germany. Catherine Miller marries Jacob Grimes in 1780 while Frederick Miller from Wendell marries Margaret in 1799. If Catherine were their child she would only be one year old when she married Jacob Grimes. According to Hubert Grimes, the lineage he proposes of the Grimes family came from an area near Manheim Germany. Wendell Miller 1 also came from Manheim, Germany. He had to have emigrated to America between the years 1730 & 1756 when Frederick Miller was born in Rowan County. Frederick Miller left land in Rowan County to his grandson George Grimes. George’s son was named Frederick Miller Grimes.
