WAY TO GO, BMARC! VOTED BEST NEW CLUB OF BROCK U. FOR 99-00
B.M.A.R.C. is an official club of the Brock University Students Union, and it is affiliated with the Niagara branch of the
Society for Creative Ananchronism, an international, not for profit educational organization deadicated to the study and re-creation of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
Here is some info about the SCA:
Today, we live in the Regional Municipality of Niagara, in Ontario, nada. In order to add a historical flavour to our activities, the SCA in Niagara lives in the Barony of Rising Waters, in the Kingdom of Ealdormere. The SCA is basically a group of people with a shared interest in a specific period in time. There are groups all over the world, including a group based from a US Army aircraft carrier! We are a not-for-profit international organization dedicated to education and re-enactment of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
In the SCA we attempt to re-enact the best parts of the middle ages, we sew clothing that is based on period design, we attempt to cook in the style and using equivalent ingredients to the middle ages, we dance and play music like they would have in period.
We also fight like they would have in period. Armored combat in the SCA uses body armor, made of metal or leather, and uses shields made of wood, edged in hose and swords made of rattan, and coated in duct tape using foam tips. Men and women may fight in the SCA, provided they practice first and pass a safety test and all combatants must be over the age of 18. We also have a thriving archery unit which enjoys the bow and arrows. There is achery at most SCA events, and Rising Waters is well known for producing some of the best archers in the Known World. There is also an opportunity to lean Fencing. Rapier is a noble weapons form, which developed fully at the last few years of the period covered by the SCA. For more information on Rapier, check out the Company of Cavalier Gentlemen Website. They are a not for profit group of Fencing enthusaists dedicated to promoting interest in both historical and modern fencing. In addition to the foil, epee and sabre, they study and re-create western european martial arts of the 17th century.
We hold Fighter Practice/Archery Practice every Sunday of the month at the Queen Elizabeth Centre, off the QEW on Facer Street. Why not show up one Sunday and ask any questions you may have!
Here's a list of Words you may hear at the college of St.Antoninus or at an SCA event...
- Mi'Lord or Mi'Lady- means a man or a woman. A term of respect, like sir or ma'am today.
- Seneschal-Person in charge of the group, example: in England you have a King/Queen and a Prime Minister, the senschal is like the P.M. Can be at a local level or Kingdom level.
- Marshal-Person in charge of the fighting, archery or fencing.
- (Voice)Herald-Person who calls out to the people. You'll hear him/her say "Oyez" (pronounced oh-yaay!)it means listen.
- (Book)Herald-Person who helps with submissions and councils on visual heraldry.
- Chatelaine-Person in charge of helping new people, answering questions.
- Chiurgeon-Person in charge of basic first aid if anybody hurts themselves. They promote general safety, prevent heatstroke etc.
- Period- a word we use to mean anything from the Middle Ages or Renaissance periods of history.
- Medieval-word for Middle Ages, does not mean "Middle Evil".
- Garb-a word we use for our "period" clothing or costume.
- Court-gathering where the King and Queen of a Kingdom make announcements and present awards. Baronies can hold baronial court, presided over by the Baron and Baroness.
- Wassail-a word of celebration meaning "long life", the modern equivalent would be "Yippee" or "WHOO" used in combat when a fighter does something chivalrous, or in court when a gentle receives an award, or at any other appropriate time of celebration.
- Feast Gear-a place setting for a feast, usually a bowl, a plate, a goblet, spoon and knife.
- Hold! This is a powerful word at an SCA event. It means "STOP EVERYTHING!" Often used during an armored fight, it means that something is wrong or could go wrong, and everyone must freeze!
- Clear! This is another powerful word. It is used when drawing your daggar or knife from it's sheath--either to ue it (for cutting string, food etc) or to admire the blade. When you hear the word, use caution when walking, and look around you for any "live steel" (blades not peace-bonded in a sheath). We do NOT use knives to pretend to "kill" someone and encourage respect for the weapons which some people use as costume accessory.
