BETA KAPPA Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity The Most Noble & Distinguished Men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated Goodwill IS the MONARCH of this house!! Welcome to the "Ballistic" BETA KAPPA chapter of ALPHA PHI ALPHA Fraternity, Incorporated. It is the MOTHER CHAPTER of ALPHA in the state of Oklahoma. Beta Kappa was founded on March 12, 1932 at Langston University. FRATERNITY HISTORY: The most remarkable leadership in the African American community in the 20th century has without question come from the ranks of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Since its founding on Tuesday, December 4, 1906, the Fraternity has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African Americans and people of color around the world. Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity in the United States established for men of African descent, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood between African Americans. The visionary founders, known as the "Jewels" of the Fraternity, are: Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle and Vertner Woodson Tandy. The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice-- educationally and socially--at Cornell. During those beginning days, the Jewel founders and early leaders of the Fraternity worked to lay a solid foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character and the uplifting of humanity. The certificate of incorporation for the organization was filed and recorded in the office of the Secretary of the State of New York as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. on January 29, 1908. The Fraternity was again incorporated on April 3, 1912, under the laws of the District of Columbia. The purpose and object of the Fraternity was declared to be "educational and for the mutual uplift of its members." CHAPTER HISTORY: The university president at that time, being a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, was against the development of Alpha Phi Alpha on the campus of Langston. He eventually organized a meeting with the men who sought the existence of Alpha Phi Alpha. He suggested that a fraternity could be started, only if it were Kappa Alpha Psi. The men bluntly said "No." Unfortunately, most of the young men had jobs on campus in order to pay for educational expenses. The president had all of them fired. Those who could remain in school stayed; however, those who could not had to leave. The remaining men were forced to meet in secret as the Ionian club. On Tuesday, March 12, 1932, Beta Kappa entered the world of Alphadom. The leading spirits in the organization of this chapter were Brothers T.W. Harris and L.H. Williams. There were 22 brothers who witnessed the birth of the chapter. Beta Kappa Chapter has enjoyed a unique and historic position within the "House of Alpha." Two (2) general presidents of Alpha Phi Alpha have come from within its membership. They are Brothers Henry Ponder and William H. Hale. Beta Kappa Chapter has consistently been a source of "light" for Brothers within and others without. May the LIGHT OF ALPHA continue to flourish...
