BIO:
I was born in Shelby,Mississippi but actually grew up in Mound Bayou,Mississippi which happens to be the oldest all black town in the United States.Growing up in Mound Bayou was a great experience for me.It was a small town rich with African American culture. There was not a lot of crime in the community when I was growing up.In fact you could leave your doors unlock and wouldn't have to worry about anyone breaking into your house.I remember as a youngster how my buddies and me would go on weekends to what we referred to as uptown and observe how the grownups were socializing. This was my first experience with people using profanity and drinking alcoholic beverages. In my household no one used profanity or drinked any alcoholic beverages. As I got older I use to hear the old timers talk about how my father use to drink and carry on.Some of the things I heard them say about Pops are legendary. He passed when I was only eight years old and he had quit all those things that I heard about him when he met my mother. He instilled a lot of positive things in me at an early age and to this day I continue to carry them on.He was a strong positive man and I loved him dearly. My buddies and I loved going uptown to observe the grownups and even though there was profanity and alcohol consumption it was a positive enviroment.Of course a fight or two broke out sometimes but never any killings. This was also my introduction to the blues and southern soul music.Bobby Rush,Tyrone Davis,Buddy Ace,Denise Lasalle,Lynn White and other local blues artists would come and perform all the time at the local juke joints and I just can remember all the excitement that it brought to town. Those times were truly the good old days.

I graduated from High School in Mound Bayou and then entered the U.S.Navy.I came from a very humble background.College at the time would have been hard for my family so thats why I joined the military. The miltary at the time was good. The country was at peace.I did my Basic Training(boot camp)in Orlando,Florida and I attended A School in Meridian,Mississippi. It was good to come back home after being away for the very first time. After A School I was stationed in Norfolk,Virginia aboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln CVN-72.At the time it was the newest aircraft carrier in the Navy.Life in Virginia was a drastic change for me.In the dead of winter we had a blizzard along the entire eastern seaboard. For a country boy from Mississippi to experience a blizzard for the very first time was not good.I might have cried for momma,I can't remember. My ship got reassigned to the west coast and I didn't won't to go.We got stationed in Alameda,California just outside of Oakland and San Francisco.Shortly after we arrived Operation Desert Storm was going on I'll never forget the day that I found out that I had to go over there.I didn't won't my mom to worry so it was two months before I even told her.The war made me look at life in a whole different way.I was just glad that GOD allowed me to return home safe. After returning from Desert Storm I left the Navy.I stayed in California for about two years and returned home to good old Mississippi.

The city life had spoiled me because it was always something to do in the city so coming back to this rural area was a little diffucult believe it or not. There aren't a lot of jobs here and we are still losing some of the few jobs that we do have.I've been blessed to have been able to work these last 12 years without losing any employment.Three companies that I worked for closed down but I've always left before the closing.God just has allowed me to time everything just right.I've started a family and I just purchased a new home a couple of years ago.I've had my share of ups and downs but by the GRACE OF GOD I have been able to maintain.

I currently reside in Renova,Mississippi.I am employed as a Inventory Clerk(Group Leader) for Pharmedium Healthcare in Cleveland,Mississippi.
BLUES AND SOUTHERN SOUL:
I've always been a fan of the blues and southern soul music.I grew up in the heart of the Mississippi Delta.I live about thirty(30) miles south of Clarksdale,MS home of W.C. Handy(born in Tutwiler,MS)who is often referred to as the father of the blues,Son House(born in Riverton,MS),John Lee Hooker,Robert Bilbo Walker,Willie Brown,Ike Turner,Sam Cooke,O.B.Buchana(born in my hometown Mound Bayou,MS),Luther Lackey and even the great Muddy Waters(born in Rollin Fork,MS) called Clarksdale home for awhile.Today academy award winning actor Morgan Freeman has a blues Club called Ground Zero located in this Delta town. The club plays host to some of the biggest blues and southern soul artists today as well as local artists. If you are ever in Clarksdale,Mississippi please checkout Ground Zero.

I grew up about foty-five(45)miles north of Greenville,Mississippi andthis was the home of The Legendary Hall Of Famer Tyrone Davis.I remember seeing Tyrone Davis perform at the outdoor blues shows when I was just a little kid.I know that I am not alone when I say that I miss TD very much.I grew up about fifty(50) miles west of Greenwood,Mississippi which was the home of Guitar Slim,Mary Wilson(The Supremes),and Denise Lasalle(born in Belzoni,MS).Just like Tyrone Davis I saw Denise Lasalle when I was just a little kid.She would perform at the local juke joints all the time.I 'm glad that The Queen is still going strong.A little further down the road is the small town of Tcula and this is the home of The Love Doctor.

The town of Inverness is only about fifty-five(55) miles north of where I grew up and this was the home of The Late Great Little Milton Campbell. The small town of Drew,MS is only about ten(10) miles to the west of where I grew up and this was the home of The Staple Singers(Roebuck"Pop"Staples). The town of Sunflower,MS is about 15 miles west of where I grew up and this is the home of The Ice-Man,Jerry Butler.
Finally there is one town about twenty miles(20) to the west of where I grew up that is rich with blues and southern soul. The town is Indianola,Mississippi the birthplace of the Legendary B.B. King(often referred to as The King Of The Blues).I've probably seen him in person more than any other blues artist to date.He use to play all the local festivals, juke joints, and any other place that there was a venue to perform.I've shaken his hands for over thirty(30) years and I'm just in my mid 30's.The people of Indianola still embrace their favorite son.He doesn't make it back as frequently as he use to but every year for his homecoming he performs outdoors at Fletcher Park.My mother told me some years ago that my father use to pick guitars with B.B. King back in the late 1940's.Indianola is also the home of The Great Albert King.I can't remember ever seeing him perform but I do remember all the times that he use to play at the local juke joints.Indianola is also the home of one of my personal favorite southern soul artist, The Dynamic Willie Clayton.I've seen him perform more in the last three years than any other artist. His shows continue to get better all the time.He always pays tribute to all the artists that have paved the way for him.He performs in this area quite often and his fan base is steady growing. All three of these artists have performed in a local juke joint that has been recognize nationwide.B.B. King and Willie Clayton still perform there whenever they come home. The juke joint is called "Club Ebony".This juke joint has played host to the likes of Ray Charles,Count Basie,James Brown,Ike Turner,Little Milton,Bobby Blue Bland,Howlin Wolf,Rufus Thomas,Bobby Rush,Denise Lasalle and even southern soul artists Sir Charles and T.K. Soul.
So as you can see I grew up in an area that has deep roots to the blues and southern soul music.I enjoy socializing at some of the local juke joints in the area.No matter what the establishment is the music remains the same. The sounds of Bobby Blue Bland,Bobby Rush,B.B. King,Tyrone Davis,Johnnie Taylor,Marvin Sease,Willie Clayton,Wilson Meadows,J. Blackfoot,Mel Waiters,Denise Lasalle,Shirley Brown,Jackie Neal,Omar Cunningham,T.K. Soul,O.B. Buchana,Quinn Golden,Carl Sims,Jeff Floyd,Sir Charles and so many other artists can be heard throughout the Mississippi Delta.

My friends and I have been attending shows in our area more frequently now. With the passing of so many of our beloved blues and southern soul artists I make it my business to attend as many shows as possible and as often as I can.I remember seeing Jackie Neal perform for the first time on March 5,2005.We took a picture together after the show.As we waited to take the picture we were holding hands and I was like a little kid at Christmas time.I told her how much I enjoyed her music and she was very appreciative.I put my arm around this beautiful lady and we took a picture together.I know that it is good PR for an artist to be polite to their fans but with Jackie Neal it was so genuine.I'll never forget the few minutes that I was blessed with her presence.I always enjoyed her music but that night I became a big fan.I left that show saying damn I can't wait to see her perform again.Five(5) days later Jackie Neal was shot and killed. Her music and that photo brings a smile to my face.

Tyrone Davis did a show in Southaven,Mississippi in August 2004.I was suppose to attend but I said I can see Tyrone Davis again anytime because he still played in my area so frequently.I decided not to attend the show.September 2004 Tyrone Davis suffered a stroke and by October he went into a coma.Four(4) months later Tyrone Davis was dead.I wish now that I would have attended that show in Southaven. It had been a couple of years since I had seen him perform last.To be honest I can't remember exactly the last time I saw him perform but I said to myself whenever there is a show in my area,I'll be there.I also said that I would take as many pictures as I can.I can be playing my music and people would say I like that song and ask who sings it?I can tell them the artist name and then I would throw in the fact that I've actually met and took photos with some of these artists. The first thing that person would say to me is stop lying.I can show people some of my photos and they would be suprised.I told them how the atmosphere is at a show and you can actually greet these artists at their shows.I've gotten so many people to attend shows in the last year that someone should be paying me(Smile!).

The artists from these shows are very appreciative.I've taken several pictures with Marvin Sease,Willie Clayton and Omar Cunningham. When I see them at a show now they greet me as Big K9.My friends tease me alot about that.If you buy these hip hop artist cd's and you attend some of their shows you could never ever get close to these so called mega superstars but with blues and southern soul artists you can greet them and even pose for pictures.I think its great for a fan to be able to have the oppurtunity to rub elbows with the people who bring them so much joy through their music. For these artists to even remember their fans shows me how much they really do appreciate people for supporting their music.People really enjoy viewing my photos and I am more than glad to share them with people.
