CURRENT EVENTS

On January 5, Mrs.Benyk taught us about an organization called TNR which is trap neuter return. What TNR does is gets volunteers to trap a colony of feral cats( wild cats or cats that have been neglected and became wild) then they get them spayed or neutered. Finally they have people feed the cats until they die out then the people go to another place with wild cats and so forth and so on. Once she had taught us about TNR she showed us a video, sponsored by 9 Lives Cat Food, which showed us spots in California were they had a feral colony that had to be relocated because of renovations in that area. But now they have been moved and have daily caregivers.

Statistics on animal abuse

There needs to be a message, sent by you to Judges and state Legislators that animal cruelty will not be tolerated.

*75% of violent offenders in prison have earlier records of animal cruelty
*Nearly 100% of serial killers interviewed have admitted to abusing animals when they were young
*In 85% of homes where a woman or child is being abused, there is also an animal that suffers abuse
*Nearly 60% of women who have been abused have also had a pet violently killed by their abuser

Did you know that spaying and neutering a stray or feral animal...?

Saves the community money
Is non lethal-sterilization rather than euthanasia
Helps prevent him from spraying and marking his territory
Helps prevent behavior problems, including unwanted aggression
Eliminates messy heat cycles
Ensures that no more unwanted animals are born
Reduces the feral and stray population

Here are some spay/neuter myths:

It changes the sex of an animal
It makes an animal fat
It causes an animal to be weak or lazy
It changes an animal's personality or disposition
A female cat or dog must have at least one litter for normal development

DECLAWING CATS BARBARIC? YOU DECIDE

"I didn't know it was the equivalent of removing everything from the bottom knuckle, meaning muscle, tendon and skeleton were ripped out when the claw was taken out", Councilman John Duran said, "I was horrified at what I had done to my poor kitties. Duran who proposes a ban in West Hollywood City, CA, said he had declawed his two cats to protect his furniture, but saw the light after he learned of the radical and painful surgery involved. Jennifer Conrad, a Santa Monica veterinarian, said the procedure is called an onychectomy, and it amounts to the full amputation of the claw and was an unnecessary mutilation of a house pet. She added "People think this is a really small thing, but it has broader scope. It really gets to the question of what we are allowed to do to animals for our convenience."reported by John M Broder, New York Times and reprinted in the AZ Republic 1/25/03.

Canine Devocalization

PLEASE, PLEASE, only use this as a FINAL alternative after every attempt at behavioral modification techniques to correct excessive vocalizations has failed.

Ear Cropping/Tail Docking

These two procedures cause pain and distress to the patient and carries inherent risks of any surgery. We oppose both done solely for cosmetic reasons.

SAVE OUR PLANET

While vacationing, please leave your towel on the rack. This means you will use it again and help save millions of gallons of water.

Pet Store MYTHS

All our animals are healthy
We do NOT use puppy mills
We get our animals from "reputable breeders"
PLEASE tell Petland to stop supporting puppy mills. https://community.hsus.org/humane/notice-description.tcl?newsletter_id=28880508

Who hasn't visited a local pet store to visit the soft, cuddly puppies in the window? What consumers don't know is the unhealthy and cruel way puppies are bred and nearly lethally transported to pet stores.

PLEASE, PLEASE, contact the breeding association of your chosen breed of cats and dogs and contact them for a local reputable breeder. Better yet, adopt from the AZ Humane Society, Petsmart or Maricopa Animal Care and Control.
Puppy mills are indiscriminant, cruel and unhealthy breeding on a mass production level of puppies and cats. There are not enough USDA inspectors and Puppy Mill operators know it.

WHY CHOOSE TO GO FUR-FREE?

Fur comes from animals who are either trapped in the wild or raised in cages in fur factories -- often referred to as "fur farms" or "ranches." Altogether, roughly 40 million animals are killed for the fur trade each year. Millions of additional animals, including dogs, cats, and endangered species, are caught accidentally in traps each year. Both trapping and ranching cause animals to suffer extreme cruelty. Every time we buy or wear clothing without fur or fur trim, we reduce the amount of animal suffering in the world. Furbearers such as bobcats, foxes, mink, beavers, coyotes, and chinchillas are individual animals who, like our companion dogs and cats, can suffer from pain, fear, frustration, and neglect. Suffering is the main ingredient in any fur trim or fur coat. And with the many warm and elegant alternatives to fur widely available, fur is simply unnecessary.

Is that CAT or DOG fur on that coat????

Shoppers beware, faux fur actually real fur http://www.hsus.org/furfree/news/faux_fur_for_sale.html
