Beckindale Revisited

It all began as Emmerdale Farm in October 1972, Yorkshire television approached Kevin Laffan to pen 26 episodes of Emmerdale Farm to be screened twice a week at lunch times. Nearly 30 years later and over 3,000 episodes later Emmerdale has had Farm dropped from the titles with every episode pack with excitment from the small dales village and it all began with the funeral of Jacob Sugden.

It has now been over 3,000 episodes since Peggy Skilbeck first spoke the first words of Emmerdale Farm after seen Marian Wilks riding on horse back through the fields. Peggy was one of the first characters to die in the show after giving birth to twins. Sharon Crosstwaite was then murdered this was a big storyline for the time but then the rape of local lass Wendy Hotson came as a real shock.

Many characters have come and gone in nearly 30 years but some faces have changed too. In 1980 Jack returned from Rome with a new face as Clive Hornby took over from Andrew Burt and more recently Jack's son Robert returned from Spain played by Karl Davies.

But the show truley changed in late 1993 as death and drama on a large scale hit the village as A Plane carrying Eastern European holiday makers exploded over Beckindale wiping out villagers in its path and scattering bodies of tourists over Beckindale.

The village was destroyed never to be the same, four months later the villagers decided that in a bid to put the crash behind them the village would have to be renamed and so at the wedding of Jack And Sarah Sugden the village was renamed Emmerdale after the long history of the Sugdens in the village.
