Traffic Counts

Traffic Counts Site

I've always had a unique interest in road infrastructure, and one of my specific interests relating to roads are the ever increasing traffic counts on the nation's freeways. Traffic counts for each year are determinted by counting all the vehicles used on a specific stretch of roadway for an entire year, then dividing by the number of days. Sometimes this is not feasable; an automatic traffic counter may only be able to record data for a 3 month period. Obviously, the total number of cars would be divided by the number of days for that 3 month period, and you would get the ADT (Average Daily Traffic). This guide will be a lot more complex in the future, but for now, I have traffic counts for a few metro regions in the country. I've put a lot of emphasis on Los Angeles' freeway system, even though I live near San Francisco. To see if your local metro region is in this list, first look through by state, and then the metro region. Eventually, this list will grow to include all the major and medium sized metro regions in the country.

Some Interesting Notes:

*Los Angeles has the busiest freeway system in the nation.
*The San Francisco Bay Area has the 2nd busiest overall freeway system in the nation, and is the most congested in terms of percentage of congested miles, hours of delay and average speeds.
*While most of the freeways in the New York City metro region do not rank amongst the busiest in the country on a freeway-by-freeway basis, N.Y.C. does have some of the busiest freeways in terms of lane-by-lane usage.
*Sacramento has one of the busiest freeway systems in the country, and the busiest in the world for a population of under 2 million.
