Betty Alvis was a candidate for mayor of Kingsport in the 2003 election, was a lifelong resident of Kingsport and has had Kingsport politics in her blood since she was a child. Betty had planned another run for Mayor in 2005 but was called home to Jesus 9-12-04.
Her exposure to Kingsport politics included spending time with her uncle, Jittney Blankenbeckler, a former Kingsport mayor himself, spending time at the Garden Court Motel with two lovely ladies who were a part of the founding of Kingsport, Margaret Netherland Elmore and Lockie Netherland Mahady, who taught her the values of those hardy souls who founded Kingsport, and wandering around town on Saturday mornings with her dad, George Hite discussing politics with local businessmen of that better day.
Betty was a housewife for several years, worked at HDC in the late 60's, had a craft store called Snoop Shop in the early 80's, became a Kingsport Realtor, then found her niche in mortgage brokerage, working in that field from 1986-1998, when she was temporarily sidelined by a stroke.
The story of her illness and recovery are on the "Betty's Health" link at the bottom of this page and will inspire you whether or not you are interested in voting for her in this election. I urge you to take the time to check it out !
She was co-founder and presently co-chair of a public interest organization, Citizens Working to Restore the Voice of Kingsport, which seeks to solve citizens city government related problems and get citizens of Kingsport actively involved in city government.
Betty loved Kingsport and it's people and always volunteered her time to good causes, taken folks into her home, etc.
Her main volunteer effort in her last years was at the Kingsport Senior Center, where she worked in the exercise room and serveed as a Senior Ambassador (introducing new and prospective members to the wonderful services the center offers).
Betty had 1 daughter, Amy Lane, age 31 and 3 lovely grandchildren
Joshua Harris, age 13, Dustin Harris, age 9, and Melanie Lane, age 4. She had plenty of experience with our city schools over the years as 3 of these 4 have been educated here in Kingsport.
One of Betty's qualifications as mayor was that she had, for many years, attended BMA meetings on a regular basis and kept herself apprised of the city's business (That is not to say that she approved of what she saw !).
If she had been elected to replace the present mayor, she would havebeen able to "hit the ground running", having had a liberal education in city politics, as well as the actual workings of city government, over the years !
Restore our Voice needs to find someone with the same kind of courage and convictions to replace Betty on the 2005 ticket. Could that be you ????????????
