Jaguar XKR Coupe & Convertible
For 2003, the sensuous XKR sports coupe and convertible undergo their most significant, and substantial, engineering update since the XKR’s original introduction in 1996. The complete powertrain has been revised from the rear axle forwards, with new, larger-capacity, more-powerful V8s and a state-of-the-art, six-speed automatic transmission. In total, there are some 900 part-number changes that help give the XKR a completely new, more dynamic driving feel. While many of the components have changed, the personality of the XKR has not; it continues to provide the perfect balance of true, high-performance sports car and luxurious, elegant grand tourer.
Two new 4.2-liter V8 engines – evolved from the now familiar 4.0-liter AJ-V8 – take the performance of the new XKR to soaring new levels. The supercharged version that propels the new XKR sees a power increase from 358 bhp to 390 bhp, providing the XKR coupe with standstill to 60 mph acceleration in just 5.2 seconds (5.3 for convertible). More dynamic off-the-line acceleration, and greater mid-range punch on the new AJ-V8, is aided by a new ZF six-speed stepped automatic. Six speeds instead of five seamless, intuitive, quick-fire changes and optimize power delivery for on-demand performance coupled with silky-smooth refinement. Both engines and transmission made their debut in the 2003 S-TYPE.
The array of advances over the previous-generation XKR also encompasses the very latest electronic driving aids. Standard on every new XKR are Dynamic Stability Control and Emergency Brake Assist together with Computer Active Technology Suspension (CATS). This two-stage adaptive ride control system automatically selects "firm" or "soft" damper settings in response to driving style.
One aspect of the XKR that intentionally has not been changed is the car’s dramatic styling. Jaguar research continues to show that customers see the XKR as stylish, beautiful and totally individual, with a character quite distinct from any rival. Subtle exterior changes include new badging, a new headlight design, three new alloy wheel designs and new exterior colors – Pacific (sapphire blue), Jaguar Racing Green, Ebony (solid black) and Midnight (deep metallic black).
