A WORLD OF FISH
Hi, my name is Landon Cowling. I have been in the fish hobby many years I am a very skilfull aquarium keeper and I have decided to start my own webpage. The only thing I need is some e-mails from my viewers, so will you please e-mail all your questions and comments (about fish or my webpage) to this e-mail address: landon_cowling@yahoo.com. Unlike many websites, every and yes I do mean every question will be answered. In the beginning, the webpage will contain very little information. But in order to get my page up and running all I need is some questions containing fish to answer.
>STARTING YOUR OWN AQUARIUM
If you are looking to start an aquarium there are some things you need to know as its not as easy as you may think.
#1YOUR AQUARIUM-Most important the aquarium.Remember not to purchase fish at this time. The size of your aquarium will limit the number of fish you can keep so remember to purchase an aquarium that can hold the fish you intend to purchase. It's best to purchase a larger aquarium or the largest you can afford as they are easier to maintain dont loose me here as strange as it may sound its true because of this for instance you purchase an aquarium of 10 gallons and one of 20 gallons.supose your power went out which ones tempature would fall fastest?Another reason is if you have those two aquariums with one fish in each the smaller 10 gallon tank would have more trouble with ammonia first do to it's small size .So purhase the larger aquarium if you want less trouble to dill with. Now that you have your aquarium you will need to purcase the chemicals you will need chlorine remover because chlorine is highly toxic to fish and will cause sure death of all your fish. Now you will need to purchase ph and amonia test kits there should always be 0.0 amonia, and as far as ph goes you need to do some research on your fish to find the proper ph level as they very on your fish. Now you need to purchase a filter.Filters may come in many different variaties such as ug,canister, power, biological and so on but I think the most commonly used filters are the under gravel and the hang on power filters your tank MUST have some type of filter to provide oxegen and clear clean water to your fish. Now you can purchase gravel and other deco`r for your tank. Always remember to wash all your deco'r in warm water before putting it in your aquarium. If you intend to keep tropical fish you must purchase a heater for your tank, be sure to purchase the right size heater for your tank. One more thing you may want to purchase is a back ground for you tank to hide all of the cords and equitment.
>SETTING UP YOUR AQUARIUM
#1 wash your aquarium with water to remove all particles of dust.
#2 put in all the heater(s) and filter(s) and other equitment in place following the manufactors instruction.
#3 put in all the gravel and rocks in position(after being washed)
#4 fill the tank half way full of water now add all ARTIFICAL decorations such as plants to your aquarium.
#5 fill the tank to two inches from the top of the tank now add all of the chemicals to the water following the manufactors instructions.
#6 add all if any of the real plants to the tank.
#7 turn on all of the equitment and make sure it is all running correctly adjust the heater over night to the correct tempature for your fish.Let the tank at least sit over night or better a few days or so,that way you are less likley to have dead fish.
#8 check the ph, ammonia, and the tempature to insure it is right for your fish you will soon get.
#9 here is the fun part adding fish make sure that your fish will get along and that you can provide the right conditions for all of them also check on how big they get and what they will eat.
#10 float the bag containg your fish in the aquarium for 15 minutes then open the bag and pore some aquarium water into the bags let it sit for five minutes and then slowly add the fish to the tank and watch them for at least an hour to make sure they are all getting along with each other. Now once a week you will need to make a 25% water change and be sure to check the ph and ammonia weekly and check the tempature every day.

>FISH OF THE WEEK IS THE-Betta
The well know fish the betta is often refered to as the simease fighting fish. These fish are often kept in small cups until sold. They grow to 4 inches. And NEVER have 2 males together as they will fight to the death. When breeding the male will construct a buble nesy and will gaurd the fry even from the female. For more information on bettas email me at landon_cowling@yahoo.com or visit the forum www.allfins.com
Q&A
Q-wetmanNY-how big does a chinese alage eater get would a 10 gallon tank be ok?
A-Well wetman the answer to how big does the chinese alage eater get well Its amazing these little fish will get to about12 inches or so and they will eat alage but they tend to like flake and pellet food far better.as far as a 10 gallon tank goes the answer is no!Do to there size they will need a tank of at least 55 gallons these answers might seem shocking but there true Ive had one before. There also highly aggresive often sucking the protective slime coating off of fish.
Q-Hi,
I have an old fish net that I havent used in like 5 years and I was wondering if there is any way I can clean it and use it again?I just dont want any bacteria ect. getting into my tank.
thanks
Josh
A-Hi Josh the answer to your question is yes you can.Its best you purchase either net safe or quickcure to clean the net in but im not saying you cant just rinse it with water It would just be more safe to use chemicals.
We will also be featuring aquarium and pond stories heres one of them this one was written by the author Landon Cowling. If you have a story just send it to me at my email address.
>A LESSON TO LEARN, BY THE AUTHOR
Here in texas the winters are very and yes i said very cold(belive it or not)and people with outdoor ponds have to deal with breaking layers of ice to keep there fish alive and healthy. The winter was warming up into the 50's I went to my local petshop to buy some more fish for my aquarium and I realised that this is my chance to put my goldfish in the pond I asked my dealer if this was all right and he said yes and that my fish would also have a chance to breed as it warms up.I moved my fish out they were fine swimming and eating every thing was perfect,so I thought!I woke up the next morning to a complete disaster! All but 2inches of water was drained from my pond all fish apeared fine.Apparently the tube running to the water fall had fallen off.I took the fish out and put them all in a large container full of water from the pond.I refilled the pond, fixed the filter added the chemicals and then added the fish (as they were running out of oxegen) they were fine, once again so I thought.the next day every thing was fine I looked closer, the sponges of my filter fell off and had sucked up my smallest fish nano he was around 2 inches. The next dat all fish were dead wow I thought what could have happend It seems that my local dealer had lied to me.It seems to be that cold water fish with longer fins will die in late winter because there fins will freeze together that way they cant move and they float and die.I just thought this could be helpfull to some one Ive sure learned not to trust my dealer and also do your research on your fish before doing major changes.
