Gasshuku at Garrison: Round 2!
After a successful weekend last year, everyone once again set off for Garrison in anticipation of more great training, good company and lots of food!
Unfortunately, the weather prevented us from trying out wall-climbing and archery again, so we met up at the centre and mingled over the first of many enormous meals. There were a few new faces this year; little did they know what was in store for them!
The morning after our first pub crawl between the two pubs of Garrison, John Richardson took us on a circuit training course, hitting pads and stretching elastic bands, complete with another piggy-back kata session. After lunch and a quick break to watch the Olympics, John Rafferty took another interesting class on ninjutsu, teaching everyone a few simple breaks and locks with both hands and sticks. A big thanks to John Richardson for agreeing to be his practice partner, everything looked rather sore!
Following another pub session that night, the next morning Alan McCausland showed us some judo applications within karate kata, specifically Bassai Dai; he certainly opened everyone’s eyes to the possibilities within kata and how all martial arts have the same base from which techniques have developed. After that it was lunch then back home after a great weekend.
Overall it was a great experience once again and a big thanks to John Richardson again for organizing the event. Also a warm thank you to John and Alan for taking classes themselves and helping round out the martial arts experience. It was also a great success socially, giving everyone a chance to talk and get to know the rest of the students who we would only ever normally see during gradings.
Here’s hoping for many more weekends!
