. . . One of the most wonderful things about heritage scrapbooking is that we can provide ourselves with a more complete picture of past generations, making them not only more real to us, but to future generations. Incorporating primary source material (such as census records, birth certificates, love letters, etc.) into your heritage scrapbook will accomplish this mission. When choosing embellishments, try to reflect the times, keeping in mind that photography was developed in 1839, around the beginning of the Victorian Era (1837 - 1901). In addition, you might want to journal the historical events of your ancestor's generation, such as inventions, wars, disease and/or social change. This will give you a more complete picture of your ancestor, which will include the surrounding world in which he or she lived. As for those ancestors for which there are no pictures, you can still make a beautiful scrapbook page by using primary source materials with period embellishments, timelines, etc. Note: The Victorian Era in the United States encompassed several historical periods, and many historians extend the length of the era to the beginning of WWI (1914). The historical periods included in this time frame are the Antebellum Period (which ended with the beginning of the Civil War in 1861), the Civil War itself (1861 - 1865), the Reconstruction Period (1866 - 1877), and the Gilded Age (1878 - 1914). The entire era also encompassed the women's suffrage movement, and the push to settle the American West via wagon train, stagecoach, and beginning in 1869, the railroad.
