B Suryanarain Rao was the first to write on Astrology in English in India. A small book under the title “A Short Compendium of Astrology” published in 1882 and another work called the “Astrological Self-instructor” in 1892, sold rapidly. This encouraged the author to simplify and publish such pamphlets as this would easily enable the ordinary public, to cast their own horoscopes and to know principal events of their lives—past, present and future.
The books are addressed to the semi-scientific readers and these form the overwhelming majority of the educated public. The advanced students of the astrological science will find a little which he does not already know, and those who are utterly ignorant of the first elements of science, will be able to understand or feel an interest in formulas which have been explained in the pages of this book. The general object kept in view in writing this book has been to produce something from which a student might derive a clear, comprehensive and distinct knowledge of Astrology.
