      The great learned ones affirm that the science of Astrology was taught by 18 sages. To help the Common man understand this great science formulated by those sages, Varahamihira wrote the Brihat Jataka and other astrological books. In unbroken continuity of tradition, this science was nurtured by a long line of learned men like Kalyana Varma and Sripati Bhattacharya who wrote the valuable Saravali and Sripati Paddhati, explaining the doctrine in clearer terms. Following them and taking the essence of the earlier works, Sri Mantreswara wrote the Phaladeepika to facilitate the study of this immemorial science.
      Although no exact date his life can be affirmed, it is learnt that he was born in Kerala and that he was familiar with the works of the earlier authors mentioned above as references to these books occur in the course of this work.
      Sage Mantreswara deals in this book with Yoga Bhavas and their effects, horoscopes of women and children, longevity, profession, diseases and death, marital bliss, etc.
