It’s Holiday time again and while we are shopping for the biggest and best presents,
our service men and women are fighting a war to protect our freedom. Once again, in conjunction with Adopt-A-Platoon I will be collecting supplies for our troops. We made a small 30 carton shipment in September. The next shipment will be at the beginning of December with the help of the American Legion Frank C Godfrey Post and the Ladies Auxiliary 60 County St. Norwalk, CT 06851
CASH DONATIONS ARE WELCOME TO OFFSET SHIPPING COSTS
I have been collecting items throughout the past several months but due to the high costs of shipping have been unable to ship much of what has been collected. The Ladies Auxiliary has generously offered to help make this shipment a reality. The troop we will be sending to has local ties and will be greatly appreciated by close to 3,000 men and women of the 3rd Infantry Division, 2nd Brigade, 3-7th Cavalry based in Fort Stewart, Savanna called Rock of the Marne and is currently serving in Iraq. If you would like to make a monetary donation or a donation of one or more of the items listed below Please stop by the American Legion to before Dec. 1st.

Thank you in advance

Letters and cards are important. Get your children to write a letter thanking our service men and women so that they know that they are appreciated. And it doesn't hurt to write more than one, as they will be given out randomly. You may include your name and address if you would like. This will give our soldiers a chance to write to someone back home if they can.

The following items are much needed by our troops

Past endeavours:

Just a huge Thank you to everyone!(those of you on the blog that came out) As always to my grandson C.J. who never lets me down when I hold these drives, The Pastimes Athletic Club for the use of their banquet room(great food by the way, just a little plug since they serve dinner every night except Monday’s) for all their help and to all who came out today to donate supplies(looks and feels like about 125lbs) and cash donations( $250 )for shipping. Can’t see out of my station wagon windows so that should give you an idea of how much was dropped off. I now have 2 car loads of supplies and still collecting. For anyone who lives in Rowayton just to let you know the Rowayton Fire Dept. is taking drop offs from July 2nd to July 6th. Mr. O’Shaunessy from Norwalk High dropped by yesterday with 20 cases that he and his students collected over the past few months and because school is out they donated them to this shipment and Biers Dorf donated a 1/2 pallet of essentials as well. Again thanks to all that were so generous and now I have to empty my car so its drivable again. Have a great weekend and early safe and Happy 4th of July.

We must never forget who gets the credit for the freedoms we have,
of which we should be eternally grateful.

watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.

A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease..

I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.

I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers' tears?

How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of Taps one night,
when everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
that taps had meant "Amen,"

When a flag had draped a coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.

I thought about a graveyard
at the bottom of the sea

of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

Enjoy Your Freedom &God Bless Our Troops

To the editor:

What a great day for a parade! Many thanks to David Cole, the organizers and security team for what I think was the best parade I've seen in recent history. I thank all those who donated supplies at the Adopt-A-Platoon float at the parade. It was a great success in that we collected approximately 75 pounds that will be the beginning of a shipment that will go to Iraq later this summer after I hold a full-day fundraiser in June at a location to be announced.

This shipment will go to a soldier with local ties to a Rowayton family and his platoon who serve with the 3rd Infantry Division, 2nd Brigade, 3-7th Cavalry. The division is based in Fort Stewart, Savannah, Ga., is called Rock of the Marne and is currently serving in Iraq.

After reading about the float and the endeavors of Adopt-A-Platoon, the soon-to-be-mother-in-law of this soldier asked me how she and her family could get involved in sending care packages to his unit. I decided then and there that this would be the platoon I would adopt this year. It's great when we can do something like this for locals, as well as those we don't know but are fighting for us each and every day.

I thank those who volunteered to march and collect supplies on the parade route: Diana Paladino (who also donated money to help decorate the float); James and Sijtje DeSimone, of Rowayton; Andrew Mattiello and his three nieces (thanks girls, you did a great job); Joe Beggan; and John Romano, who donated his time and great-looking gold Lexus to drive World War II veteran Lenn Keiffer, who served in the Navy. Thanks to Karen Lyons for her generous donation of decorations for the float; to Ed Marini and Phil D'Acunto for donating that great Can Man truck to pull the float; and Mike and Kathy Foley for organizing a supplies collection. A special thanks goes to Stew Leonard's, which each year, with the help of Doug Hempstead, donates its "hay ride" so that I can have a float to collect supplies.

Those who missed the chance to donate and would like to do so can watch the local papers for the upcoming fundraiser or can contact me at jtromano1@yahoo.com.

Again, thank you all for the generous donations and letters from the kids to our troops: You have no idea how much our men and women appreciate all that Norwalk does for them.
