The Spread and Control of Coyotes

This is quite the wonderous animal. Very adaptable and prolific. So much so that they need to be controlled by a higher predator. The only natural one left is man. Originally from the southwest it has spread to all of the united States, Canada and South America. Being not of these areas the prey they eat there are under stress. In the upper midwestern states where the wolf was eliminated years ago the coyotes moved in. The wolf kills and eats some of the same types of prey, but the coyote eats some other species in those areas than the wolf did. Where the wolf resides the coyote stays away. Wolves will kill coyotes also. Some wolves are being re-introduced in areas but I doubt that many will be allowed to grow to the extent that they can exercise some control of coyote population. The grizzly bear is also a predator of the coyote but it cannot do it all either and can only do so in certain areas. Most people don't want grizzly bears and wolves living in our back yards to control coyotes. That leaves man to do it.

The following:

9. How are coyote populations managed?

Current coyote management includes a year-round firearm season and specified trapping season. However, these methods are difficult to implement in urban areas due to local ordinances that prohibit trapping and hunting.

The above is an exerpt from this website www.execpc.com/~pdmequon/coyotes.htm

Implementing hunting and trapping is difficult in urban areas. What has happened is that the coyote has spread all over. Being a territorial animal, the offspring have to continue moving out till they come close to human population centers. The coyote does not desire this but is forced to because of his population increase. If the hunting and trapping were increased to keep the numbers in better check they wouldn't have to be forced close to human habitation. It is a very simple process.

When coyote numbers are large there will be a decline in food for them. Disease becomes more of a problem. Starvation becomes a problem. Disease and starvation are not humane killers. There has been noted in some areas that when trapping and hunting have increased and there was ample food supplies that the population actually can increase for what happens is that the coyote has larger litters.

Proper management of the coyote populations is good for the coyote and good for humans. It is also good for the other animals that coyotes prey on. Everything is kept in a healthy maintained enviroment.
