An Interview With Anna Brecon aka Lady Tara
SHE WAS THE LADY OF THE MANOR UP NORTH, AND NOW ANNA BRECON HOPES TO CONQUER THE WEST END...
As posh totty Lady Tara Thornfield, Anna Brecon was last seen heading into the sunset with Sean Reynolds, the unlikely lad who won the wilful Tara’s heart. After a string of affairs it was time Tara settled down and, as Anna explains, time she moved on as an actress...
“It was hard leaving something that was so enjoyable to work on, but there wasn’t anywhere else for Tara to go. Most of the men in the village had received her favours, and I think by then Seth was starting to look scared!. But the main thing was that it wasn’t challenging anymore, and being an actor is all about stretching yourself. I do miss the people of Emmerdale, however, I don’t miss getting up at half past five on a cold February morning to go out on location!” she adds. “I have fond memories of Tara herself, but I certainly don’t miss playing her.”
Currently starring in Alan Ayckbourn’s new play, Sugar Daddies, Anna is enjoying being in front of a live audience.
“The wonderful thing about performing in a theatre is that you communicate directly with the audience, that’s something you never get with TV,” she admits
Theatre is Anna’s true love and it’s also where she met the other love of her life - Stephen Beckett, who soap fans will remember as Dr Matt Ramsden in Corrie and Pc Mike Jarvis in The Bill.
“We met when we both starred in The Blue Room,” reveals Anna. “I love that play and it was a wonderful challenge for me. The producers needed actors with a high profile to get bums on seats, so if I hadn’t done Emmerdale, I would never have been in The Blue Room. That play did wonders for my career and my credibility as an actor, and, of course I met Stephen too. I suppose you could say all those good things have come as a consequence of Emmerdale.”
After getting married in a low-key ceremony last year, Anna and Stephen are now based in Brighton - although they haven’t been together much as they’re both so busy.
“It’s ironic, because the fact that we haven’t seen much of each other means our careers are going well,” sighs Anna. “If we were together more often it would be because we were unemployed! We just make a lot of effort to get together whenever we can.”
Although Anna’s enjoying working away, she admits that she misses her seaside home as well as her husband.
“I love living in Brighton. Moving down there was the best thing I have ever done. There was a time when I felt I had to be in London at all times, just in case I got called to an interview. But I have different priorities now. To have the sea and the South Downs on your doorstep is absolute heaven!”
