8 The sign of the Iron Gates inn, Monks Heath, Macclesfield commemorates a tradition dating from the 13th century. It shows a kneeling yeoman and a cowled figure bidding heavy gates to open. Behind, a white horse rears in front of distant Alderley Edge. The skeleton of events is as follows:
A Mobberley farmer/horse-dealer rides a white horse, skirting Alderley Edge. He meets a very tall cowled apparition holding a black wood staff He returns from Macclesfield Fair to the same spot that evening. The apparition leads him by the Golden Stone, Stormy Point, to Saddle Bole. Horses are heard neighing below the ground. The earth opens, revealing iron gates to a cavern containing heaps of gold and silver and sleeping warriors with their horses. They will awaken when the eagle drinks princes’ blood from the headless corse. In a similar legend centred on Lucken-hare hillock, Eildon, a whirlwind expels the horse-dealer from the cavern at midnight.
